Inhabitants of the upper area of El Barrial canton, in Los Planes de Renderos, complain that they have gone five years without receiving drinking water through the pipes and must buy it to cover their basic needs. The families are asking the mayor of San Salvador Sur, Mario Vásquez, and the central government to seek alternatives in the face of a problem that, they assert, has persisted for years.
Access to drinking water in the area is irregular, according to residents, in some sectors the service arrives approximately once a month, while in other areas between two and three months can go by without receiving water. Faced with this situation, they must buy tanks of water at a cost of 12 dollars each, which represents an expense of up to 48 dollars a month if they purchase one per week. Buying water, according to the inhabitants, throws off the budget for meeting other needs such as food.
The inhabitants state that the lack of pressure in the pipes mainly affects the families in the upper part. Although they pay around two dollars for the piped drinking water service, they assert that the supply is insufficient to cover their needs.
The shortage also affects household chores. Some families must travel to other places to wash clothes and take on additional expenses for transportation and payment for the use of water. The situation becomes more difficult for households with girls and boys, whose daily expenses must be adjusted to buy the resource.
According to residents, there was a water spring nearby, but it dried up and today they must look for water. For the residents, the problem is not recent. For this reason, they are asking the municipal authorities and the central government to visit the community and propose solutions to guarantee the supply of drinking water.
