Former President Elías Antonio Saca appeared this Thursday, October 29, before the Second Penitentiary Oversight Court, at the Isidro Menéndez Judicial Center, to file a formal notice regarding his release after serving a 10-year sentence.

Upon his arrival at the courts, the former president did not give statements to the press and limited himself to saying “I’m no longer used to giving statements”, and he remained beside his lawyers, who guided him throughout the entire process.

At the end of the proceeding, it was the lawyer, Mario Machado, who briefly informed the media about the procedures carried out: “We’ve just come to the court to formally report the release, as was requested yesterday, the very day we left the corresponding prison”.

After filing the notice, the defense stated that they will remain waiting for the court’s notification regarding the completion of the sentence.

Along with former President Saca, the former private secretary of the Presidency, Élmer Charlaix, also appeared, likewise represented by Machado.

The former Salvadoran president was sentenced on September 13, 2018, to five years in prison for embezzlement and another five for money and asset laundering; however, he had been detained since October 2016, when he was arrested during the wedding of one of his sons, so the authorities took this time into account as part of the sentence imposed.
