It is 5:00 in the afternoon, and a bus with no identified route, with LED lights and vibrant colors, parked a few meters from the bus stops, on the Pan-American Highway. The fare collector got off and shouted that the vehicle is headed toward Sonsonate: “A dollar! A dollar to Sonsonate! It’s empty!” The call worked, and a few passengers got on. The driver of the vehicle waited 5 minutes and left.
From San Salvador to Sonsonate and vice versa, the route that makes that trip is the 205. It departs from the western terminal and charges a $0.75 fare.
The route takes a long time to come by, and when it finally arrives it is full, and to travel to Sonsonate, with the traffic that awaits them, passengers opt for the bus that charges $0.25 more, but they ride seated.
One of the drivers of those vehicles explained why passengers prefer to pay more for the same trip. “In our case, it would be because we have empty seats and we provide more direct transportation. Also, we stop at places where the 205 doesn’t. We practically work on the basis of clientele, because we already have the people who are going to get on.”
But it is not only buses that provide that service; there are also microbuses covering the same route, and the cost is $2. Several users lined up along the side of the sidewalk to board in an orderly manner.
Another destination in demand among users is Lourdes, in Colón, La Libertad Oeste. The microbus charges each passenger $1.25, even though route 79 makes that trip and the cost is $0.45, and $0.75 for the special service.
Some users showed their support for this transportation, and others their rejection. One said that “they charge you far too much,” referring to the price the microbus charges to Ahuachapán, $3, while route 202 costs $1.00, but it takes a long time and is full. He paid $2 more to ride seated and with air conditioning.
One of the users who spoke with this newspaper explained that he prefers the transportation that charges more because he gets to his destination quickly, but he does not do so every day. “Even though they charge $1, I pay it, but only when I’m in a hurry, because they’re faster,” he stated.
MNT: unfair competition
Lucio Vásquez, secretary of the National Transportation Board (MNT), maintained that this type of transportation is illegal, since it does not comply with the regulations to which the routes authorized by the Vice Ministry of Transportation (VMT) are subject.
He asserted that it is “unfair competition,” since they begin their route at La Ceiba de Guadalupe headed west and not from the terminal; he also pointed out that they charge more, without it being regulated by the VMT.
“If the premise is that we can improve the service and that they (the passengers) are already experiencing it by paying a quarter ($0.25) more, what does that mean? That we can improve. With a fare increase, the vehicles will go out onto the streets more frequently to provide more services,” he emphasized.
The business owners have asked the Government to approve raising the fare by $0.17.
