Women working as managers in the National Directorate of Hospitals (DNH) of the Ministry of Health (MINSAL), under a professional services arrangement, denounced violations of their labor rights, work overload, and situations of harassment by female supervisors.
In a statement released by the “Salvador Allende” Movement for the Defense of Health, the workers asserted that, while the Health authorities talk about humanizing hospitals, their working conditions do not reflect that discourse. According to the complaint, they have been scheduled for unpaid shifts, a requirement that they assert was not provided for in the conditions under which they were hired.
The managers also warned of a workload that they described as unsustainable and that can put the health of staff at risk, including that of workers with medical conditions that require special care.
As an example, they presented the case of a manager with a weakened immune system who was initially told that she would not be assigned to certain areas, but who reportedly later received changes to those arrangements.
In addition, they reported that a worker was allegedly denied leave to care for her daughter, who will undergo an operation. “In response to the request, the answer was that the best option was to resign,” they stated.
The grievances also extend to the supervisors. The complainants stated that at the San Rafael National Hospital some of them create a difficult work environment, and they questioned their preparedness to perform supervisory functions.
In light of this situation, the workers demanded respect for their labor rights and an end to the requirements that are added without prior agreement. They also called for an end to the harassment of staff and for the compliance targets to be evaluated.
Furthermore, they warned that they could make public the identities of the supervisors to whom they attribute practices of harassment, mistreatment, and intimidation, if these situations continue.
