A mother who has gone four years and five months without hearing from her son, detained under the state of exception, reports having been the victim of a $6,000 scam by a man who presented himself as a lawyer and offered to arrange his release through a habeas corpus petition.
After handing over the money, she says she received threats and demands for another $10,000 in exchange for not making an attempt on her son’s life.
The situation worsened when other people got in touch with the family and told them they had contacts in the Prosecutor’s Office, the police (Policía Nacional Civil) and prisons. The mother recounted that she received threats and warnings that she could be detained on charges such as bribery and money laundering if she reported what had happened.
In light of what had happened, the woman went to the authorities and filed a complaint during the first days of January 2023. According to her testimony, she provided information and a telephone number to the investigators, but to date she has not received any answers about the progress of the case. She also states that they did not return the phone she left when she filed the complaint.
Fearing that there was a network behind the threats, the woman sought support from the Movimiento de Víctimas del Régimen (MOVIR) and was referred to Tutela Legal, where they helped her file a habeas corpus petition.
Currently, she states that her son is at the Zacatecoluca penitentiary farm. About two months ago, according to her account, they asked her for yellow clothing for him and told her that he would be in a trust phase and performing work duties. However, she maintains that she has not received clear information about his legal situation or about when she will be able to see him again.
Since his detention, she states that she has not seen her son again and that she does not know the circumstances of his judicial proceedings.
