More than 350 students from the Professor Juan Oscar Salomón Educational Complex, in the El Socorro canton of Zacatecoluca, La Paz Este, are affected by the overflowing of the Blanco River during the rainy season, which prevents them from attending their classes and returning to their homes due to the lack of infrastructure in the area.

The most affected students live in the cantons of San Francisco Los Reyes, El Papayo, El Polvillo and La Lucha, and they are forced to cross the riverbed over a concrete ramp in the area of the El Calvario chapel to reach the school. However, when the river’s flow increases, it prevents them from crossing.

The students’ parents explain that, although there is a footbridge in the area, the water level prevents the use of the infrastructure, leaving them cut off. The parents assert that the installation of that pedestrian walkway was for the use of the chapel.

“Thank God, the rainy season this year was not heavy; it only has to rain a little and the main street that leads to our complex floods on us. Let’s hope that our mayor’s office (of La Paz Este) helps us with a bridge and that they can install larger piping to benefit more than 350 students and three very large communities that use this street as their main entrance,” the educational complex stated through its Facebook account.

The students’ parents state that this problem has occurred every year during the rains for more than 30 years, and that, despite their requests to the municipality, to date they still have no favorable response. In addition, they explain that vehicle traffic on that stretch is also affected.

“I consider it to be of the utmost importance that they build the bridge, because there are children who come alone. Sometimes the parents come and they have to stop for quite a long time to wait for the river’s floodwaters to go down,” said Sonia Velásquez, a mother.

In this regard, LA PRENSA GRÁFICA requested the position of Mayor Marcela Pineda, through the communications area of the mayor’s office, regarding any project planned in that area, but they did not respond.
