Salvadoran Luis Sandoval, 48, was found dead at the Folkston processing center, the Hispanic network N+ Univision Atlanta reported.

In a statement, ICE identified him as Luis Sandoval, 48, originally from El Salvador, who died on October 23, 2026, while he was at the D. Ray Processing Center in Folkston, Georgia.

According to ICE, as cited by N+ Univision Atlanta, center staff found Sandoval at around 1:46 a.m. with a ligature around his neck and began resuscitation maneuvers. Charlton County Emergency Medical Services arrived afterward to continue the assistance efforts.

Sandoval was pronounced dead at approximately 2:28 a.m., the source added.

Authorities reported that this death is under investigation and that an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and official manner of death.

This death adds to the nearly 60 deaths of immigrants in ICE detention centers from the beginning of 2025 through 2026 so far.

Detainees report assault inside the center

According to N+ Univision Atlanta, Sandoval’s death became known amid reports from several detainees about assaults that an immigrant suffered inside the Folkston center.

According to testimonies received by reporter Lourdes Herrera of N+ Univision Atlanta, several immigrants held at the facility reported a beating of a man who, according to their accounts, might have mental health problems.

The complainants placed the incident on October 21 and indicated that it had allegedly occurred in the detention center’s dining hall. At that time, they said they did not know the immigrant’s name, but they did mention his place of origin.

The calls continued throughout the day, and five detainees joined in the reports. Their testimonies agreed on the general description of the events, N+ Univision Atlanta says.

One of the accounts also referred to an isolation area known as “the hole,” where the man was supposedly located.

Sandoval had been detained in New Jersey

According to the immigration history released by ICE, Sandoval entered the United States on a date and at a location that were not specified, without passing through any immigration screening.

On October 2, 2026, ICE agents in Newark, New Jersey, arrested him and served him with a notice to appear before an immigration judge.

On October 8, he was transferred to the Folkston processing center, where he remained awaiting his first deportation hearing.

ICE also reported that Sandoval had a criminal record that included convictions for aggravated assault, terroristic threats, receiving stolen property and theft, in addition to a drug possession charge.
