Various organizations and social movements are demanding the freedom of people they consider innocent and who were captured within the framework of the state of exception.
Samuel Ramírez, of the Movement of Victims of the Regime (MOVIR), stated that, as a result of the statements about the release of people detained under this regime, they have launched a campaign to demand freedom for the innocent, without abbreviated proceedings.
For her part, Lourdes Palacios, of the Committee of Relatives of Political Prisoners and Politically Persecuted Persons of El Salvador (COFAPPES), expressed the view that the President of the Republic is encroaching on “powers that are not his to exercise.”
The Madres por la Libertad collective also spoke out in response to President Nayib Bukele’s statements about the release of some people who had allegedly collaborated with gangs.
Liliana Uría, a member of the collective, maintained that innocence should not be considered a benefit and rejected the continued denial of the right to the presumption of innocence of the people detained under the state of exception.
Likewise, she expressed her concern about the possibility that detained people may be required to accept guilt for crimes they did not commit as a condition for obtaining their freedom.
In light of this situation, the organizations and collectives are demanding an individual and exhaustive review of each case, in order to guarantee that the releases are carried out with respect for the rights of the detained people.
