El Salvador sends more troops to search for missing soldiers in Haiti
The GSF confirmed the arrival of a contingent of Salvadoran soldiers this October 22, to assist with the search in Haiti.

The government of El Salvador sent a new contingent of military personnel to Haiti this October 22, to assist in the search for four aviation technicians who have been missing since Sunday, October 18, and who are reportedly being held hostage by gangs.

The Gang Suppression Force (GSF, by its English acronym) issued a statement on its social media on the night of this October 22 and confirmed that a contingent of Salvadoran soldiers arrived today in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.

“On October 22, a contingent from El Salvador arrived in Port-au-Prince to support the ongoing search and security operations in Plaine du Cul-de-Sac. The Force continues its operations in the area in close coordination with the Haitian National Police and the relevant operational partners. Residents of Santo and the surrounding communities are urged to avoid the areas where operations are being carried out,” the multinational task force posted.

The number of troops was not specified, but hours earlier the U.S. newspaper Miami Herald reported that “100 special forces soldiers from El Salvador” had been sent to the Caribbean country, and it confirms this through “sources familiar with the deployment.”

“Sources indicated that negotiations were still underway over the form that deployment would take,” the Miami Herald stated. LA PRENSA GRÁFICA asked the Armed Forces of El Salvador (FAES) and the Gang Suppression Force (GSF, by its English acronym) about the operation, but as of press time they had not provided details.

On October 21, the government of El Salvador, through President Nayib Bukele, urged the ringleaders of the criminal groups to release the soldiers alive and warned them: “Do not take our words as unfounded threats. We already finished off the gangs in El Salvador, and we can finish you off too.”

That same day, the GSF and the government of Haiti confirmed that they were carrying out operations to determine the whereabouts of the aviation technicians and that they had neutralized several gang members during the attacks in the territories.

“A high-level meeting was held at the Office of the Prime Minister, under the coordination of the Head of Government, with the officials involved, to assess the ongoing interventions and determine the measures necessary to strengthen the operations, in close collaboration with the Gang Repression Force,” the Haitian government published.

The identities of the Salvadoran soldiers have still not been revealed, and so far it is known that on the day of the attack they were shopping in a high-risk locality and that gang members set fire to the vehicle in which they were traveling.
