Electricity demand grew 5.7% through September, driven by extreme heat
Consumption totaled 5,740.7 GWh in the first nine months of the year, in a context marked by droughts.

Electricity demand grew 5.7% in the first nine months of the year, a period marked by high temperatures due to the development of the El Niño phenomenon, according to a report published by the Transactions Unit (UT).

From January to September, households and businesses demanded 5,740.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh), equivalent to an increase of 309.08 GWh over the 5,431.66 reported in the same period of 2025.

Energy demand has been marked by the high temperatures recorded this year because of El Niño, which particularly affected the eastern region, with readings above 40 °C, in addition to causing four periods of drought that together totaled 89 dry days.

The UT specifies that in September alone, 657.58 GWh were demanded, 11.5% more than in the same month of 2025.

Among the first nine months of the year, the highest consumption peak was recorded in May, with 694.66 GWh, followed by July, with 689.48 GWh.

When breaking down the daily behavior, the UT reports that the maximum power demand was recorded on August 20, at 7:00 p.m., with 1,301 megawatts (MW), making it the moment of highest consumption recorded in the history of El Salvador.

60.6% of generation was thermal

The UT reports that 60.69% of September’s energy demand was covered by thermal generation, which in El Salvador encompasses plants running on bunker fuel and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Of September’s demand, 26.76%, equivalent to 179.97 GWh, corresponded to bunker fuel generation, a resource subject to oil prices on the international market, while 33.93% came from the only natural gas plant, with 228.21 GWh.

Due to the reduction in rainfall caused by El Niño, hydroelectric generation lost share and in September covered 7.59%, with 51.02 GWh.

Geothermal generation injected 130.07 GWh, equivalent to 19.34% of September’s demand, while solar contributed 68.68 GWh (10.21%) and wind 11 GWh (1.64%).

In addition, imports totaled 2.50 GWh (0.37%), deviations 0.65 GWh (0.10%), and distribution 0.39 GWh (0.06%).

The average price per megawatt-hour stood at $192.07 in September, $5.57 lower than the $197.64 it reached in August, but it remains $106.79 higher than at the start of the year, compared with January 2026, when it was reported at $85.28.
