Four suicides, two homicides committed by family members and six serious incidents of domestic violence have been documented by the Childhood and Adolescence Observatory of the Organization of Salvadoran Women for Peace (Ormusa) between January 1, 2025, and October 9, 2026, incidents that, according to the institution, seriously affect the mental health of this population group.
According to the Observatory’s most recent bulletin, these acts of violence were identified through media monitoring, since, for the time being, official figures on acts of violence, disaggregated by age and other demographic aspects, are not publicly accessible.
This is only one part of the reality affecting children as reflected in the media, which shows the need to guarantee safe family environments, identify risk factors in a timely manner and strengthen access to mental health services and psychosocial support,” Ormusa states.
The cases involve children and young people ranging from 18 months to 17 years of age, but cases of sexual violence and abandonment are not included, since that is a statistic kept separately. “The situations described are only one part of the realities affecting girls, boys and adolescents when they live in unsafe family environments, characterized by situations of domestic violence, lack of protection, persistent conflicts or mental health needs that have not received adequate attention,” the report adds.
Violence in safe environments
Among the cases documented by Ormusa there is a common factor: acts of violence committed, in most cases, by people close to the minors.
One of those cases is the assault suffered by an 18-month-old girl in the Primavera canton of Santa Ana. According to information from the Judicial Centers, the girl’s father beat her after also assaulting her mother, in May 2026. The person responsible was arrested and, in October of this year, was sent to trial.
Also notable are the cases of two minors, aged 2 and 10, who were assaulted by their mother and their father, respectively, both also in Santa Ana and occurring between May and August 2026.
The two most recent cases are the homicide of a six-year-old boy in Ciudad Barrios, San Miguel, in an attack committed by a relative against his entire family group, and the abuse that an underage girl in Ahuachapán was subjected to by being left locked up and without food along with her mother, an act committed by her own father. The latter, however, occurred after the closing of Ormusa’s report, so it is not included in its most recent figures.
Ormusa points out that it is necessary to strengthen mental health care for minors in El Salvador, something they describe as “consistent with the Crecer Juntos Law,” which establishes “the importance of considering the risk and vulnerability factors” that can affect children and adolescents.
