This Wednesday, the President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, inaugurated the binational General Manuel José Arce Bridge, a new piece of infrastructure that will connect El Salvador with Guatemala through the La Hachadura border, in Ahuachapán.

The structure, built over the Paz River, links La Hachadura with Pedro de Alvarado, in Guatemalan territory, and seeks to improve the transit of people, private vehicles and freight transport between the two countries.

During the inauguration ceremony, the president reported that the construction represented an investment of $32.6 million and will directly benefit approximately 43,000 people who live in the communities near the border area.

The new bridge is 420 meters long, making it the second longest in El Salvador, surpassed only by the Integración Bridge, whose length reaches 664 meters.

Bukele also highlighted that the project generated 230 direct jobs and 1,150 indirect jobs during its development.

The inauguration brought together residents of La Hachadura, who took part in the presentation of the new border infrastructure.

The new bridge will begin operating this Wednesday

During the inauguration, the president specified that the General Manuel José Arce Bridge will go into operation this October 15 and explained that one of the problems with the previous crossing was its vulnerability to the rising waters of the Paz River during the rainy season.

When the water level rose considerably, traffic had to be temporarily suspended, affecting transport operators, merchants and people who needed to cross between the two countries.

“We have a long rainy season: it rains in May, June, July and even November, and we cannot keep closing our border with our sister country, Guatemala,” Bukele said during his remarks.

According to the president, these interruptions harmed commercial and tourism activities and the mobility of the area’s residents.

In addition, it has earthquake-resistant features and a projected initial service life of more than 50 years, provided that it receives the appropriate maintenance.

What does the new General Manuel José Arce Bridge include?

The project is not limited to the 420 meters of structure built over the Paz River, but also includes complementary works to improve access and traffic conditions.

As the president explained, approximately 1.4 kilometers of access roads were built and improved on the Salvadoran and Guatemalan sides.

Among the work carried out are interventions on route AHU-25S, a connection to the CA-2 highway, the installation of drainage systems, road signage and lighting improvements.

The bridge has traffic lanes in both directions, spaces designated for pedestrian traffic and safety railings.

It also has higher-power lighting fixtures to facilitate nighttime travel, especially by trucks, tractor-trailers and other heavy transport vehicles that use this international crossing.

Bukele noted that the lighting system was modified before the inauguration to adapt it to the needs of border infrastructure.

The project also incorporates new offices for immigration controls, waiting rooms, restrooms and a surveillance system.

These facilities seek to improve the conditions for serving people who cross between El Salvador and Guatemala.

Bilateral agreement since 2010

During his speech, Bukele recalled that the need to build a new border bridge had been contemplated for more than a decade. As he mentioned, in 2010 a bilateral agreement was established to develop infrastructure that would improve the connection between El Salvador and Guatemala.

However, he asserted that the project remained unexecuted for several years. “The years went by and it wasn’t done,” the president stated.

It is worth noting that La Hachadura is one of the points used for transporting goods between the two countries, which is why the new infrastructure seeks to offer better conditions for the movement of cargo vehicles.
