Residents of Espíritu Santo Island, in Puerto El Triunfo, Usulután, arrived this morning at the First Court Against Organized Crime of San Miguel to express their support for two women originally from the community, accused of the crime of illicit associations over alleged links to gang groups.

According to residents, both women: Eidi Roxana Claros, present at the hearing, and Sandra Leticia Hernández, absent, are innocent. They have been on trial since last Monday alongside 88 alleged gang members, in a judicial proceeding that brings together 90 people and is expected to conclude this Friday, October 16.

Lesly Schuld, of the Center for Exchange and Solidarity (CIS), which provides accompaniment to the women on trial, explained that Sandra was captured on the night of April 28, 2023, at her home, during an operation in which more than 20 members of the Police and the Armed Forces took part. According to her account, Sandra was with Eidi when they arrived to detain her.

Later, she said, Eidi was also arrested after showing up at a police base to ask where Sandra had been taken, even though, according to Schuld, she had initially been told that the operation was aimed at capturing Sandra, who in April 2023 received measures alternative to arrest. But this past July 29, the First Court Against Organized Crime of San Miguel revoked her measures.

Schuld stated that Sandra has been known on the island for her work as a mototaxi driver for several years. For his part, Juan Hernández, a resident of the island, described the detention of both women as unjust and maintained that neither of them belongs to a gang. In particular, he questioned the arrest of Eidi, who, he said, had only gone to ask about Sandra’s situation.

The resident also asserted that there has been no gang presence on Espíritu Santo Island and stated that the community, together with the authorities in the area, has always maintained control of security. The residents asked that the judicial authorities assess the situation of the accused women individually and not in a collective proceeding.
