Washington (EFE).- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone call this Tuesday with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, whom he urged to protect his country’s critical infrastructure from “malign foreign influences,” in an apparent reference to China, and to vote against the Cuban government at the UN.

“The Secretary and President Bukele discussed the importance of keeping critical infrastructure, including ports, secure and protecting it from malign foreign influences,” the State Department said in a statement, without explicitly mentioning Beijing.

The statement adds that Rubio urged El Salvador to join the United States and “like-minded partners” to advance shared priorities at the United Nations.

According to the Secretary, “the Cuban regime will not carry out the reforms that the Cuban people deserve as long as it believes that the international community is on its side.”

Support against the resolution to lift the embargo on Cuba

The vote on the resolution that Cuba submits every year to call for an end to the U.S. embargo is scheduled for this coming October 28 at the UN General Assembly.

The United States is seeking to have its allies vote against the text, which in 2025 was approved with 165 votes in favor, 7 against and 12 abstentions. El Salvador was absent from that vote.

Bukele has been one of the main Latin American allies of Donald Trump’s administration since the start of his second term, and the two governments even reached an agreement to deport irregular migrants from the United States to the Salvadoran mega-prison, the Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot).

Rubio is also pursuing an intense strategy to reduce China’s influence in Latin America, a region where Beijing has made large investments in infrastructure.

His first trip as Secretary of State, in 2025, took him to Panama, where he pressured the government to separate the canal from Chinese companies.
