Work on the viaduct at Los Chorros is suspended due to a request for a redesign, according to Korean engineer
In his remarks, the Korean spokesperson did not explain what this design change consists of, nor since when the works have been halted.

Construction work on the Francisco Morazán viaduct, on the Pan-American Highway known as Los Chorros, is currently suspended due to modifications and redesigns required by the client, that is, the Salvadoran State, as revealed this Wednesday by the head of engineering works for the aforementioned construction project, Jung Ho Seuk, of the company Dongbu Corporation.

Despite this pause in the execution of Section II of the project, the head of works stated that efforts are continuing to resolve the design adjustments and to try to resume work at the site before the year ends. The information was revealed in a presentation at an event held by the Embassy of Korea in El Salvador, in which the Salvadoran Association of Industrialists (ASI) and the National Association of Private Enterprise (ANEP) participated.

The infrastructure project provides for work on the route between the districts of Santa Tecla and San Juan Opico, in La Libertad, along three main sections, with a scheduled duration of 54 months counted from October 2023. The project has financing shared 50% each between the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) and the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

In July of this year, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Romeo Rodríguez, stated that the highway widening project was 60% complete and that they intended to finish the works this year, leaving only the elevated structures pending; yesterday, the person in charge of the works asserted that the complete project would be ready in 2028.

On that occasion, the minister explained that the project now includes a second viaduct more than 300 meters long, located in the Los Guarumos sector, just before reaching the Los Chorros bathing resort.

“Likewise, there is another viaduct that, in a way, well, we haven’t, haven’t mentioned it that much because it is only a little over 300 meters, like the one on the La Libertad bypass, let’s say. The biggest is the one of more than a kilometer, but it includes another viaduct around the Los Guarumos sector, right before reaching the Los Chorros bathing resort,” the minister revealed on that occasion.

Construction of the highway began in October 2023, with the South Korean company Dongbu Corporation in charge, a period in which the earthworks to widen the highway began.

The viaduct project comprises three sections: two for widening and a third that is the construction of the viaduct away from the mountain of rocks. In the first widening, from the Las Delicias area, in Santa Tecla, they will work on 4.79 kilometers of the current five lanes, which will become eight, four toward San Salvador and four toward the west.

The second section would be a 32-meter-high viaduct with eight highway lanes from the Los Chorros tourist center to La Pedrera. The third section would be built from La Pedrera to the San Juan Opico turnoff, in La Libertad, where they will connect with the overpass. It is the longest section and comprises 8.9 kilometers. The highway will have eight lanes, but they will be reduced to six as far as Opico.
