The rector of the University of El Salvador (UES), Juan Rosa Quintanilla, announced that they have sought to speak with the Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele, so that the alma mater may be included in the increase in Education investment equivalent to 8% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“I was saying at the time that we have taken steps to speak with the President of the Republic; a couple of weeks ago I sent a note to the Minister of Finance so that he would allow us to explain to him what the university does, what it plans, and so that he would get to know the University’s vision, in terms of becoming an institution that, despite the financial limitation, has been there contributing,” the university rector stated yesterday in La Tribu’s radio interview.
However, the same university representative confirmed that they are still waiting for a response from the president but that they are optimistic. “We are optimistic that the University can be considered in that amount (8% of GDP for education) for this house of higher learning,” he added.
This past August, the Salvadoran president announced that the Government would increase annual investment in education to $3,000 million, an amount that, according to the president, is equivalent to more than 8% of El Salvador’s GDP.
The State spending plan for 2027, presented last week in the Legislative Assembly, projects an investment in the education sector of $3,416 million, according to the Minister of Finance, Jerson Posada Molina.
In early August, the UES revealed that it had requested $380 million for the 2027 fiscal year. For 2026, the UES received an allocation of $116.5 million.

El rector de la Universidad de El Salvador (UES), Juan Rosa Quintanilla, anunció que han buscado hablar con el presidente salvadoreño, Nayib Bukele, para que el alma mater sea incluida en el incremento de inversión de Educación equivalente al 8% del Producto Interno Bruto (PIB) del país.
«Yo decía en su momento que hemos hecho la gestión para hablar con el señor presidente de la República, hace un par de semanas yo le enviaba una nota al señor ministro de Hacienda a efecto de que nos permitiera explicarle qué es lo que la universidad hace, qué proyecta y conozca la visión de la Universidad, en función de convertirse en una institución que a pesar de la limitante financiera ahí ha estado aportando», sostuvo ayer el rector universitario en la entrevista radial de La Tribu.
Sin embargo, el mismo representante universitario confirmó que aún siguen esperando respuesta del mandatario pero que son optimistas. «Somos optimistas a que se pueda considerar la Universidad en ese monto (8% del PIB para educación) para esta casa de estudios superior», añadió.
En agosto reciente, el mandatario salvadoreño anunció que el Gobierno aumentaría la inversión anual en educación hasta $3,000 millones, una cantidad que, según el mandatario, equivale a más del 8 % del PIB de El Salvador.
El plan de gastos del Estado para el año 2027, presentado la semana pasada en la Asamblea Legislativa, proyecta una inversión en el sector educación por $3,416 millones, de acuerdo con el ministro de Hacienda, Jerson Posada Molina.
