The secretary general of the Vamos party, Cesia Rivas, said that all actions taken by the party’s Honor Tribunal, which is conducting proceedings against lawmaker Claudia Ortiz, are currently “on pause” after it was decided that the tribunal’s membership will be chosen in internal elections.
Rivas said they had asked the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to determine whether the Honor Tribunal should be made up of five or three people, and whether the appointment of its members should take place, given that it is the “only body that doesn’t clearly define what its election process is.”
“And this happened with the last appointment. That’s how it has been established that the Honor Tribunal will have to go through internal elections. So, that being the case, everything the Honor Tribunal has done up to this point is on pause,” said Rivas, who is also an alternate lawmaker.
The leader of the centrist party explained the current status of the Honor Tribunal after being asked whether the candidacies of Claudia Ortiz and Pacífico Chávez, both of whom are facing proceedings before the Honor Tribunal whose term ended on September 25, were at risk in the event of an expulsion.
The term of the Vamos leadership headed by Cesia Rivas ended on September 25 and was extended for six more months by the current TSE. The previous Honor Tribunal had opened three proceedings against Claudia Ortiz, Pacífico Chávez and Juan Carlos Villalta, all of whom are candidates for full lawmaker seats for San Salvador and hold the number 1, 4 and 5 spots on the ballot. Rivas, for her part, holds the number 2 spot.
Rivas also argued that the candidacies have been final since they were ratified by the party’s National Assembly following the internal elections held on July 12 and 26. “The 60 candidates were ratified along with their alternates, and the 15 municipal councils were ratified. From that point on, that right is guaranteed, and it’s the party’s obligation to guarantee it,” she said.
The Vamos secretary noted that, for now, the concern is not holding the party’s internal elections to choose its next leadership, and she pointed out that the TSE has extended their term by six months. Ortiz, however, convened a National Assembly at which a Permanent Electoral Commission (CEP) and an Honor Tribunal were elected; Ortiz’s communications office has not yet responded as to whether they will notify the TSE of these appointments. Today, TSE President Roxana Soriano would only say that the TSE’s resolutions must be strictly complied with.
