30% of Inspected Freight Vehicles Fail to Meet Technical Requirements to Operate, Says Public Works Ministry
The Ministry of Public Works says it has inspected 1,653 heavy freight vehicles since August 8.

Nearly 30% of the heavy freight vehicles inspected since August 8 do not meet the minimum technical requirements to operate, Public Works and Transport Minister Romeo Rodríguez revealed Wednesday, following a traffic accident caused by a dump truck on Constitución Boulevard in which two people died.

Rodríguez explained that since August 8 the ministry has inspected 1,653 heavy freight vehicles dating from before 1999, and of those, 361 were trucks and 1,292 were trailers; of the trucks, 232 met the minimum requirements, as did 1,040 of the trailers.

“Practically 30% of the vehicles that have undergone technical inspections have not met the minimum requirements, and they haven’t even been able to renew their registration cards until they pass the technical inspections,” the minister stated.

Rodríguez explained that they have 12 workshops available to carry out technical inspections, but that starting yesterday they would seek to raise that figure to 40 to increase the number of inspections and prevent more tragedies.

The heavy freight vehicle fleet totals 158,402 units, including truck tractors, light and heavy trucks, and trailers.

The minister said that, starting today, they will seek to double vehicle checkpoints and inspections of heavy freight transport in order to “protect the lives of the population.” He warned that business owners who fail to meet the requirements to operate will face penalties such as having their permits revoked.

At a press conference, the minister revealed that the driver who caused the accident on Constitución Boulevard did not have a permit to drive freight vehicles; for that reason, and for the resulting deaths, he was arrested along with the legal representative of the company GEA S.A. de C.V., which owns the dump truck that crashed.

The official also noted that there are set schedules for freight traffic, particularly during the high-traffic periods known as rush hour.
