Dozens of mothers gathered in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador to demand that the government allow their detained relatives to receive visits, especially from their children, who long to see them on the upcoming Children’s Day.

The group, which formed in May of this year to demand that the government release their unjustly detained children, has asked the government to create a program to address the psychological needs of the children, since they live with the trauma of knowing nothing about their parents detained under the state of exception.

In that regard, they asked the government to grant the children an opportunity to visit their fathers or mothers who were detained under the state of exception, on the occasion of World Children’s Day, which is celebrated on the first day of October.

The mothers said that children whose parents were arrested suffer from their absence, and that this affects their lives. In fact, it has been documented that many children have been left in the care of grandparents or aunts and uncles because their parents were unjustly detained.

It is worth recalling that the state of exception began in late March 2022, following a spike in homicides. It has remained in effect ever since. In fact, last Wednesday, the Legislative Assembly approved the 55th extension. According to the government, more than 93,000 alleged gang members have been detained, but among them are thousands of innocent people.

Many of these detainees have no ties to the gangs, and many were accused on the basis of a false anonymous tip or to fill police quotas.

The mothers emphasized the importance of psychological help for the minors, since this situation could affect the course of their lives, given that many children witnessed their parents’ arrest and saw the police take them away. They also said that the children “are stigmatized” at school because of this, and that a psychological program for them would be “the least” the government could do, since its rhetoric speaks of “being born and growing up with love,” but in practice, for this segment of the population, it is quite the opposite.

The Mercedarian Congregation celebrated its founding at the Metropolitan Cathedral together with the La Merced Catholic schools, in honor of Our Lady of Ransom (Virgen de la Merced), known as the Virgin of Mercy and patron saint of prisoners. The commemoration coincided with the presence of the Mothers for Freedom, who were demanding the release of their unjustifiably detained children.

Before Mass began, the authorities ordered the cathedral gates closed to remove the mothers who had settled on the church steps, as they had done on previous occasions. No details were given as to why the Church decided to close its doors.

Madres exigen visitas y apoyo psicológico para hijos de detenidos en régimen de excepción

Docenas de madres se concentraron frente a Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador para exigir al Gobierno que sus familiares detenidos puedan ser visitados, especialmente por sus hijos, quienes ansían verlos en el próximo Día del Niño.

Este colectivo, que nació en mayo de este año para exigir al Gobierno la liberación de sus hijos detenidos injustamente, ha pedido que se cree por parte del Gobierno un programa para atender el tema psicológico de los niños ya que viven con el trauma de no saber nada de sus padres detenidos bajo el régimen de excepción.

En ese sentido, pidieron que el Gobierno les conceda a los niños, una oportunidad para visitar a sus padres o madres de familias que fueron detenidos bajo el régimen de excepción, esto bajo el marco del Día Mundial del Niño que se celebra en el primer día de octubre.

Las madres señalaron que los niños que les fueron arrestados sus padres sufren de la ausencia de estos y afecta su vida. De hecho, se ha documentado que muchos niños, han quedado en los cuidados de los abuelos o tíos ya que los progenitores fueron detenidos injustamente.

Es de recordar que el régimen de excepción inició a finales de marzo de 2022, luego de un repunte en los homicidios. Desde entonces, se ha mantenido vigente. De hecho, el pasado miércoles, la Asamblea Legislativa aprobó la prórroga número 55. Según el Gobierno, se han detenido a más de 93 mil presuntos pandilleros; pero entre ellos a miles de personas inocentes.

Muchos de estos detenidos, sin tener vinculaciones con las pandillas; y muchos acusados por una falsa denuncia anónima o por cuotas de los agentes policiales.

Las madres enfatizaron la importancia de una ayuda psicológica para los menores, ya que esta situación podrá afectar el desarrollo de su vida, ya que muchos niños presenciaron la captura de sus padres y vieron a la PNC llevárselos. También, señalaron que en los centros educativos “son estigmatizados” por ello, un programa psicológico para este sector sería “lo mínimo” que podría hacer el Gobierno, ya que en su discurso habla de “nacer y crecer con cariño”, pero en la práctica, con este sector poblacional, es todo lo contrario.

La Congregación de los Mercedarios celebró en la Catedral Metropolitana su fundación junto a los colegios católicos de La Merced, en honor a la Virgen de la Merced, conocida como la Virgen de la Misericordia y patrona de los prisioneros. La conmemoración coincidió con la presencia de las Madres por la Libertad, quienes exigían la liberación de sus hijos detenidos de forma injustificada.

Antes de iniciar la misa, las autoridades ordenaron cerrar los portones de la Catedral para desalojar a las madres que se habían instalado en las gradas del templo, como ya en ocasiones anteriores lo habían hecho. No se dio detalle de porqué la Iglesia decidió cerrar sus puertas.
