The Monte Grande chapter of the Indigenous Movement for the Articulation of Ancestral Peoples’ Struggles (MILPA) warned that, in addition to the ecocide that, according to the organization, real estate companies Global Developers and Salazar Romero are allegedly causing with the destruction of more than 10 manzanas of forest in the Monte Grande canton, San Miguel Centro, an ethnocide is also allegedly taking place due to the destruction of pre-Hispanic cultural heritage.

“Proof of this has been the springs, the water sources, from what was the vestige of a pre-Hispanic lagoon that is being filled in along with the spillways,” MILPA denounced.

The organization has also denounced that numerous archaeological pieces are allegedly being buried as a result of the construction work. According to MILPA, the relevant authorities were informed at the time about the presence of these remains in Monte Grande, but to date they have received no response, nor have the competent institutions shown any interest.

“As proof of that, as a member of the Lenca Quelepatique Indigenous Community Council, we preserve these pieces that we have found in the places that are now being worked on by the developer and destroyed by the construction companies,” the organization denounced.

“We’re talking about pieces that are Lenca, because here in Monte Grande we have that diversity of cultures that existed. These pieces are Lenca and are found almost only in the Lenca areas,” they explained.

Notable among the rescued pieces are some that, according to the organization, demonstrate the cultural diversity of the area and represent elements associated with duality, as well as vessels and a whistle alluding to the now-extinct “water dog.” There are also lithic and metal pieces; among the latter is one that, according to the testimony, would be the only piece of its kind found in the area.

“On this other side, we have Maya pieces. Here we have a ceremonial plate that is an invocation to the rain god, and we have this piece that, without a doubt, has the features of a Maya chief,” the organization detailed.

“So we have this diversity of cultures present in these lands, and if we don’t give them the proper value they deserve, they’re going to disappear forever, and well, not even the history will remain. For this reason, as the Monte Grande chapter of MILPA, we denounce this attack on our cultures, on our ancestral roots,” they concluded.

The complaints come in the context of the construction of the “Urbanización Biarritz” residential megaproject, promoted by Global Developers and Salazar Romero, which aims to span more than 200 manzanas and build 6,900 housing units.

The organization considers that these construction projects represent a disregard for archaeological protocols, and that this puts sacred sites at risk of destruction.

In addition, the organization estimates that the environmental and health impact on communities would also be reflected in increased heat waves, water shortages, and the risk of flooding for 300 families.

Recently, MILPA called on authorities to minimize the damage in the area and seek a solution to the ongoing environmental destruction.

“In total, approximately 100 manzanas of forest have been destroyed. Because before these roughly 10 manzanas we mentioned, they had already destroyed maybe 50 manzanas in the eastern zone. I mean, the disaster is enormous. This is going to affect the heat in San Miguel. San Miguel is already hot as it is, but with this, even more so,” they said at the time.

Denuncian destrucción de patrimonio lenca y maya en zona intervenida por proyecto inmobiliario

La Seccional Monte Grande del Movimiento Indígena para la Articulación de las Luchas de los Pueblos Ancestrales (MILPA) alertó que, además del ecocidio que, según la organización, estarían provocando las inmobiliarias Global Developers y Salazar Romero con la destrucción de más de 10 manzanas de bosque en el cantón Monte Grande, San Miguel Centro, también se estaría produciendo un etnocidio, debido a la destrucción de patrimonios culturales prehispánicos.

“Prueba de ello han sido los ojos de agua, los vertientes de agua, de lo que fue el vestigio de una laguna prehispánica que está siendo aterrada junto con los vertederos”, denunció MILPA.

La organización también ha denunciado que numerosas piezas arqueológicas estarían quedando soterradas como consecuencia de las obras. Según MILPA, en su momento se informó a las autoridades correspondientes sobre la presencia de estos vestigios en Monte Grande, sin que, hasta ahora, hayan recibido una respuesta o mostrado interés por parte de las instituciones competentes.

“Para prueba de eso, como miembro del Consejo Indígena Comunitario Lenca Quelepatique, preservamos estas piezas que hemos encontrado en los lugares donde ahora están siendo intervenidos con la desarrolladora y la destrucción por parte de las constructoras”, denunció.

“Estamos hablando de piezas que son lencas, porque aquí en Monte Grande tenemos esa diversidad que hubo de culturas. Estas piezas son lencas y se encuentran casi solo en las áreas donde son lencas”, explicó.

Entre las piezas rescatadas destacan algunas que, según la organización, evidencian la diversidad cultural de la zona y representan elementos asociados con la dualidad, además de vasijas y un silbato alusivo al desaparecido «perrito de agua». También se encuentran piezas líticas y metálicas, entre estas últimas una que, de acuerdo con el testimonio, sería la única pieza de este tipo encontrada en el área.

“Por este otro lado tenemos lo que son piezas mayas. Aquí tenemos un plato ceremonial que es la invocación al dios de la lluvia y tenemos esta pieza que, sin lugar a dudas, tiene rasgos de un cacique maya”, detalló la organización.

“Entonces tenemos esa diversidad de culturas presentes en estas tierras y, si no les ponemos el valor correspondiente que merecen, van a desaparecer para siempre y pues no quedará ni la historia. Por esta razón, como MILPA Seccional Monte Grande, denunciamos este atentado hacia nuestras culturas, hacia nuestras raíces ancestrales”, concluyó.

Las denuncias se producen en el contexto de la construcción del megaproyecto residencial «Urbanización Biarritz», impulsado por Global Developers y Salazar Romero, que pretende abarcar más de 200 manzanas y establecer 6,900 unidades habitacionales.

La organización considera que estas construcciones representan un irrespeto a los protocolos arqueológicos y esto pone en riesgo de destrucción sitios sagrados.

Además, estima que el impacto medioambiental y de salud en las comunidades también se vería reflejado en el aumento de las olas de calor, desabastecimiento de agua y riesgo de inundaciones para 300 familias.

Recientemente, MILPA hizo un llamado a las autoridades para minimizar los daños en la zona y buscar una solución a la continua depredación medioambiental.

“En total, ha sido la destrucción de aproximadamente 100 manzanas de bosques que se han destruido. Porque antes de estas 10 manzanas que hemos mencionado, aproximadamente, ya habían depredado en la zona oriente quizás unas 50 manzanas. O sea, el desastre es grandísimo. Esto va a venir a afectar al calentamiento que va a haber en San Miguel. De por sí ya es caliente San Miguel, pero con esto todavía más”, manifestaron en esa ocasión.
