Lawmaker Claudia Ortiz, of the opposition party Vamos, said Tuesday that the opposition parties Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) and Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) have no chance of governing the country.

“Can Arena and the Frente aspire to govern the country again? I don’t think so, and many of those watching us say, ‘It’s a lie that they’ll be able to govern again.’ So the logic of these parties, in participating in an election without any real chance of competing, is simply to keep surviving,” she said in an interview on Telecorporación Salvadoreña’s Frente a Frente. “They no longer have any chance of continuing to govern,” she insisted.

According to Ortiz, the opposition in El Salvador needs to “evolve,” moving from “being nothing more than mere resistance to being a real alternative for the country” in order to compete for the country’s government.

The lawmaker, who is vying for the general secretariat against her alternate, Cesia Rivas, said her party is “focused on building that alternative” and directed her criticism at the other two opposition parties, the former ruling parties Arena and FMLN, maintaining that their “incentives” are to “accommodate themselves to the situation.”

“An opposition political party that no longer aspires to be in government, or for which being in government is no longer viable, loses its essence. A real alternative for the country can’t be improvised a few months before the campaign,” she said.

Ortiz called working with Arena “incompatible” because of the right-wing party’s stance in votes on the state of exception. “A functioning state has to guarantee both things — security and rights at the same time. The discussion about the state of exception should no longer be about whether it continues or not, which is what the ruling party wants to box us into, but about how we can have both. For a party like Arena to give grand speeches in the Legislative Assembly and then get up and leave, and not vote — I find that inconsistent. Given that kind of half-heartedness, we don’t have a compatible way of working on other issues,” she said.

Ortiz insisted that the elections scheduled for February 28, 2027, have “constitutional objections” and that her party will not participate in the country’s presidential and vice-presidential elections.

Vamos holds one of the 60 legislative seats, with Ortiz as principal and Cesia Rivas as alternate.

In the legislative elections, Vamos received 91,675 votes, or 2.94% of the valid votes for the Legislative Assembly.

It holds one of the 3 seats held by the opposition, as 2 are held by Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) lawmakers Marcela Villatoro and Francisco Lira. The FMLN has no seats in the Legislative Assembly but, because it received 195,920 votes nationwide for the Legislative Assembly, it will be able to serve on electoral boards.

La diputada Claudia Ortiz, del partido opositor Vamos, aseguró este martes que los partidos de oposición Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) y Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) no tienen posibilidades de gobernar el país.

“¿Acaso Arena y el Frente pueden aspirar a volver a gobernar el país?, yo creo que no y muchos de los que nos están viendo dicen ‘es que es mentira que van a poder volver a gobernar’. Entonces, la lógica de estos partidos, al participar en una elección sin tener las posibilidades reales de competir es simplemente seguir sobreviviendo”, dijo en la entrevista Frente a Frente de Telecorporación Salvadoreña. “Ya no tienen posibilidades de seguir gobernando”, insistió.

Según Ortiz, la oposición en El Salvador necesita “evolucionar”, pasando de “ser nada más una mera resistencia a ser una alternativa real para el país” para competir buscando disputar el gobierno del país.

La legisladora, quien disputa la secretaría general a su suplente Cesia Rivas, aseguró que su partido está “enfocado en construir esa alternativa” y enfiló sus críticas hacia los otros dos partidos de oposición, los exgobernantes Arena y FMLN, de quienes sostuvo que “sus incentivos” son “acomodarse a la situación”.

“Un partido político de oposición que ya no aspire a ser gobierno o que ya no sea viable ser gobierno se desnaturaliza, una alternativa real para el país no se improvisa unos meses antes de la campaña”, expresó.

Ortiz consideró “incompatible” el trabajo con Arena por la postura que adopta el partido de derecha en las votaciones del régimen de excepción. “Un Estado que funciona tiene que garantizarle las dos cosas, seguridad y a la vez derechos, la discusión sobre el régimen de excepción ya no debe ser si sigue o si no sigue, que es en lo que nos quiere encasillar el oficialismo, sino cómo podemos tener ambas cosas. Que un partido como Arena se eche los grandes discursos en la Asamblea Legislativa y después se levanten y se van, y no voten, a mí me parece incoherente, ante esas tibiezas no tenemos una forma compatible de trabajar en otros temas”, indicó.

Ortiz insistió en que las elecciones que se celebrarán el 28 de febrero de 2027 tiene “reparos constitucionales” y que no participarán en las elecciones de presidente y vicepresidente del país.

Vamos tiene uno de los 60 escaños legislativos ocupado por Ortiz como propietaria y Cesia Rivas como suplente.

En las elecciones legislativas, Vamos logró 91,675 votos, un 2.94 % de los votos válidos para la Asamblea Legislativa.

Ocupa uno de los 3 escaños ocupados por la oposición, ya que 2 son ocupados por diputados de Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) Marcela Villatoro y Francisco Lira. El FMLN no tiene escaños en la Asamblea Legislativa pero, como a nivel nacional logró 195,920 votos para Asamblea Legislativa, podrá ser parte de las juntas electorales.
