Vendors evicted from the area around San Salvador’s Central Market questioned the relocation options offered by the San Salvador Centro mayor’s office on Monday, while the municipality says that 700 of the 1,500 merchants included in the process have already applied for a stall.

The eviction is part of the eighth phase of the Historic Center revitalization and recovery process. Over the weekend, municipal crews carried out operations at various points around the Central Market.

The San Salvador Centro mayor’s office reported Monday that 700 of the 1,500 vendors included in the process have already applied for a stall among the relocation options offered by the municipality, which, according to the municipality, are 32 municipal markets.

Germán Muñoz, the San Salvador Centro director of Environmental Sanitation, Parks, and Green Spaces, explained that for several months they have held meetings with merchants from the various streets to reach agreements on their relocation.

“Agreements have been reached on relocation to the 32 options, the 32 San Salvador Centro markets,” Muñoz said.

The official added that the alternatives have been laid out according to each merchant’s line of business and interests.

“It’s important to stress that of the 1,500, 700 have already applied for a stall at one of the markets or one of the options they’ve been given,” he said.

Muñoz also said that a considerable number of merchants already had businesses at other locations, while the municipality is keeping channels of dialogue open with the rest to reach agreements.

Vendors question the stalls

However, evicted vendors consulted by Diario El Mundo said they have had difficulty finding a space at the markets offered by the municipality.

One of the merchants said she has filed three applications to get a stall and that, even though they were told they could choose among the available options, when they went to the markets they found the spaces were already taken.

“I’ve sent in three applications and they’re not going to give anyone anything. I had my stall right here in front of this pharmacy and they took my photo. Don Irving came and took our photos, told us he was going to relocate us, and if you go into the market, there are no stalls — every stall already has an owner,” she recounted.

The merchant said the vendors have been told not to worry and to choose a market, but that when they go they don’t find any available spaces.

Another vendor, identified as Luci, explained that for 26 years she sold vegetables in the area that was cleared and that this work was her family’s livelihood.

“That’s where we earned our living, our daily bread. It’s the only income we have because we’re not educated — our parents… we had no choice but to come and work,” she said.

According to the merchant, the vendors were told they would be organized and later relocated, but she said they have yet to receive the stalls they were offered.

“We ask, and they chase us around like we’re criminals — that’s not fair. We have no other choice, we’re always running, but we can’t get work because we’re not educated,” she protested.

Indirect workers also affected

The eviction also impacts people who depended on commercial activity in the area.

Francisco Salvador Martínez, who worked as a “bultero,” making trips to haul merchandise for the merchants, said the reduction in vendors will also affect his income.

“We’d make the trips to the stalls for the women selling here. It affects us because they’ve taken everything from the merchants — the sales, the stalls — this place has turned into a desert,” he said.

Martínez added that other workers dedicated to hauling merchandise will have to find other sources of income as commercial activity declines.

“All the cart haulers, my coworkers, have to find other ways to get by, because who are they going to haul for here? People here have been left aimless,” he said.

The San Salvador Centro mayor’s office has said that the work for this phase will involve approximately five workdays before passage is reopened in the Pasaje Acosta area and the vicinity of Los Ilustres Cemetery.

Los vendedores desalojados de los alrededores del Mercado Central de San Salvador cuestionaron este lunes las opciones de reubicación ofrecidas por la Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro, mientras la comuna asegura que 700 de los 1,500 comerciantes contemplados en el proceso ya solicitaron un puesto.

El desalojo forma parte de la octava fase del proceso de revitalización y recuperación del Centro Histórico. Durante el fin de semana, los equipos municipales realizaron intervenciones en distintos puntos de los alrededores del Mercado Central.

La Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro informó este lunes que 700 de los 1,500 vendedores incluidos en el proceso ya solicitaron un puesto dentro de las alternativas de reubicación que ofrece la comuna, los cuales, según la comuna son 32 mercados municipales.

El director de Saneamiento Ambiental, Parques y Zonas Verdes de la Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro, Germán Muñoz, explicó que durante varios meses han mantenido reuniones con los comerciantes de las diferentes calles para alcanzar acuerdos sobre su reubicación.

“Se ha logrado acuerdos de lo que es la reubicación de las 32 opciones, los 32 mercados de San Salvador Centro”, afirmó Muñoz.

El funcionario agregó que las alternativas han sido planteadas de acuerdo con el rubro y los intereses de cada comerciante.

“Es importante recalcar que de los 1,500 ya hay 700 que han solicitado un puesto en cada uno de los mercados o en cada una de las opciones que se les ha dado”, señaló.

Muñoz también sostuvo que un grupo considerable de comerciantes ya contaba con establecimientos en otros sitios, mientras que la comuna mantiene abiertos los canales de diálogo con el resto para alcanzar acuerdos.

Vendedores cuestionan los puestos

Sin embargo, vendedores desalojados consultados por Diario El Mundo aseguraron que han tenido dificultades para conseguir un espacio en los mercados ofrecidos por la comuna.

Una de las comerciantes afirmó que ha presentado tres solicitudes para obtener un puesto y que, pese a que les indicaron que podían elegir entre las opciones disponibles, al acudir a los mercados se encontraron con que los espacios ya estaban ocupados.

“He mandado tres solicitudes y a nadie le van a dar. Yo tenía el puesto aquí en frente de esta farmacia y me tomaron fotos. Don Irving vino y nos tomó fotos, nos dijo que nos iba a reubicar y, si usted entra al mercado, no hay puestos, todos los puestos tienen dueño”, relató.

La comerciante aseguró que los vendedores han recibido indicaciones de no preocuparse y escoger un mercado, pero que al acudir a estos no encuentran espacios disponibles.

Otra de las vendedoras, identificada como Luci, explicó que durante 26 años se dedicó a la venta de verduras en la zona desalojada y que esa actividad representaba el sustento de su familia.

“De ahí ganábamos el sustento, el pan de cada día, es el único ingreso que tenemos porque no somos estudiados, nuestros padres, a nosotros no nos quedó de otra que venir a trabajar”, expresó.

Según la comerciante, los vendedores fueron informados de que serían ordenados y posteriormente reubicados, pero aseguró que hasta ahora no han recibido los puestos ofrecidos.

“Nosotros pedimos, nos andan corriendo como que fuéramos delincuentes y eso no es justo. No nos queda de otro, andamos corriendo siempre, pero no podemos entrar a trabajar porque no somos estudiados”, reclamó.

También afecta a trabajadores indirectos

El desalojo también impacta a personas que dependían de la actividad comercial de la zona.

Francisco Salvador Martínez, quien trabajaba como «bultero» y realizaba viajes para trasladar mercadería de los comerciantes, afirmó que la reducción de vendedores también afectará sus ingresos.

“Les hacíamos los viajes a los puestos a las que vendían. Nos afecta porque como todos los comerciantes les han quitado todo, las ventas, los puestos, esto ha quedado como un desierto”, señaló.

Martínez agregó que otros trabajadores dedicados al traslado de mercadería tendrán que buscar otras fuentes de ingresos ante la disminución de la actividad comercial.

“Todos los carreteros, compañeros míos, tienen que rebuscarse por otros medios, porque aquí ¿a quién le van a traer? Y aquí la gente ha quedado sin rumbo”, afirmó.

La Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro ha señalado que los trabajos correspondientes a esta etapa contemplan aproximadamente cinco jornadas antes de habilitar nuevamente el paso en el sector del pasaje Acosta y las inmediaciones del Cementerio Los Ilustres.
