Vendors set up around San Salvador’s Central Market are facing a new eviction process. The San Salvador Centro mayor’s office notified them that they have 72 hours, starting August 19, to voluntarily remove their structures and merchandise from spaces slated for remodeling.
The notice covers sections of Cementerio Street, between 7th and 9th Avenues South; Pasaje Acosta; 11th and 13th Avenues South; 12th Street West; and 29 de Agosto Avenue, among other locations.
The measure is part of a project to revitalize and reclaim public spaces. In the notice delivered to the vendors, the mayor’s office said it had previously held multiple meetings with them to inform them about the process and relocation options.
However, the vendors say those meetings have not translated into concrete solutions and that they still do not know where they will be able to continue working.
“They say it’s voluntary, that they’re going to relocate us, but none of it is true,” said a vegetable vendor who has worked in the area for 11 years and inherited the business from her mother.
According to the vendor, during the meetings they were told about 32 relocation options and that they could choose three, but not one has been assigned.
“They talk about 32 options, but they don’t give us any. We have debts, we have to pay rent, bills — where are we going to get the money if they remove us and don’t give us anywhere to sell?” she asked.
Another vendor from around the Central Market, who has worked in the area for more than 20 years, also complained about the lack of solutions:
“They’re promising stalls, but they’re not giving us anything concrete.”
The vendor said they will face losses because of the eviction.
“We have hope (for a solution), but right now people are going home. In my stall alone, I’ve invested about $2,000, but I have to take it down after 20 years of working,” he said.
The vendors said they are not opposed to leaving, but they believe they need more time to meet their financial commitments.
Given this uncertainty, they are asking to be allowed to stay on the streets during the year-end season and for the eviction to be postponed until January.
“We’re calling on the mayor and the president to give us the season so we can pay the loans we have. We have children to support,” the vendor said.
The vendors’ uncertainty comes months after the San Salvador Centro Municipal Council approved an ordinance to speed up the relocation of evicted vendors to municipal markets.
The regulation established a special framework to facilitate access to the Municipal Market System for vendors included in the reorganization processes. The measure was presented as a tool to reduce the time and requirements for assigning stalls.
The vendors, however, say they are not confident that the new ordinance has made a significant difference, because, they say, people evicted from other areas are still waiting to be relocated.

Los vendedores instalados en los alrededores del Mercado Central de San Salvador enfrentan un nuevo proceso de desalojo. La Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro les notificó que tienen un plazo de 72 horas, a partir del 19 de agosto, para retirar voluntariamente sus estructuras y mercadería de los espacios que serán remodelados.
El aviso comprende sectores de la calle Cementerio, entre la 7.ª y 9.ª avenida Sur; el pasaje Acosta; la 11.ª y 13.ª avenidas Sur; la 12.ª calle Poniente y la avenida 29 de Agosto, entre otros puntos.
La medida forma parte de un proyecto de revitalización y recuperación de espacios públicos. En el aviso entregado a los comerciantes la alcaldía afirma que previamente realizó múltiples reuniones con los vendedores para informar sobre el proceso y las alternativas de reubicación.
Sin embargo, los comerciantes aseguran que esos encuentros no se han traducido en soluciones concretas y que todavía desconocen dónde podrán continuar trabajando.
“Ellos dicen que es voluntario, que nos van a reubicar, pero nada es cierto”, afirmó una vendedora de verduras que tiene 11 años de trabajar en la zona y que heredó el negocio de su madre.
Según la comerciante, durante las reuniones les han hablado de 32 opciones de reubicación y les han indicado que pueden elegir tres, pero ninguna ha sido asignada.
“Ellos hablan de 32 opciones, pero ninguna nos dan. Nosotras tenemos deudas, hay que pagar casa, recibos, ¿y de dónde lo vamos a sacar si ellos nos quitan y no nos dan a dónde vender?”, cuestionó.
Otro comerciante de los alrededores del Mercado Central, con más de 20 años de trabajar en la zona, también reclamó la falta de soluciones:
“Ellos están prometiendo puestos, pero concreto no dan nada”.
El vendedor aseguró que enfrentarán pérdidas debido a su desalojo.
“Tenemos la esperanza (de una solución), pero la gente ahorita va para su casa. Solo en mi puesto yo he invertido unos $2,000, pero tengo que deshacerlo después de 20 años de estar trabajando”, manifestó.
Los comerciantes aseguraron que no se opone a retirarse, pero consideran que necesitan más tiempo para enfrentar sus compromisos económicos.
Ante esta incertidumbre, piden que se les permita permanecer en las calles durante la temporada de fin de año y que el desalojo se postergue hasta enero.
“Le hacemos un llamado al alcalde y al presidente que nos dé la temporada para poder pagar los créditos que tenemos. Tenemos hijos que mantener”, expresó la vendedora.
La incertidumbre de los vendedores ocurre meses después de que el Concejo Municipal de San Salvador Centro aprobara una ordenanza para agilizar la reubicación de comerciantes desalojados hacia los mercados municipales.
La normativa estableció un régimen especial para facilitar el acceso al Sistema Municipal de Mercados a vendedores incluidos en los procesos de reordenamiento. La medida fue presentada como una herramienta para reducir los tiempos y requisitos para la asignación de puestos.
Los comerciantes, sin embargo, aseguran que no confían en que la nueva ordenanza haya generado una diferencia significativa, debido a que, según afirman, personas desalojadas de otros sectores todavía esperan ser reubicadas.
