Since work began on the Mejicanos metrocable in October 2025, the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has invested $55,990,000. The first $20,014,111.60 was given as an advance between June and December 2025, and the remaining $35,975,888.40 was provisioned between January and May 2026.
“Ongoing. Construction and equipping of an aerial cable public transportation system: Line 2, Mejicanos district, San Salvador department,” details Table 71 of the June 2025–May 2026 Annual Report, published on July 31, 2026. The funding source is the Government of El Salvador (GOES).
This project, Line 2, will consist of 22 towers and 153 cabins that will transport 3,500 passengers per hour from Mejicanos to downtown San Salvador, near the 1º de Mayo Maternal and Child Hospital of the Salvadoran Social Security Institute (ISSS), according to the project description found in the Environmental Assessment System of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARN).
The metrocable was first announced in late September 2025 by the Minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez, who said construction would take 18 months, starting in October of that same year, with a deadline of January 2027. However, progress stands at 41.88%, according to the annual report.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA published an exclusive on this Line 2 project on February 7, when it was presented to residents of the buildings in Colonia Zacamil, in the Mejicanos district, San Salvador Centro, popularly known as “los 400.”
According to residents’ accounts, they were only told that construction of tower 4 — the only one located in a densely populated area, between buildings 23 and 24 — would begin on February 16 and would last 75 days, without having been consulted beforehand about the project. However, the work was completed in early July.
Over time, residents complained about the disruptions caused by the construction and the felling of trees in the area, including a Maquilishuat, El Salvador’s national tree. This tower 4 is one of the 22 described in the MARN project; however, the MOP posts on its social media that there are 23 towers.
This same document also details that, as an inter-institutional action, the Ministry of Housing and the National Popular Housing Fund (FONAVIPO) executed an addendum with the MOP for $154,400.00.
The description of the initiative undertaken details: “Addendum Number Thirteen to the Fund Transfer Agreement from FONAVIPO and the Ministry of Housing, which resulted in the ‘resettlements for the project called Construction and equipping of the aerial cable public transportation system, Line 2…'”
Other metrocable projects
This is the first time the MOP has published information about the money invested in the metrocable. In addition to Line 2 in Mejicanos, it mentions that for Line 1, whose main destination will be Soyapango, the “execution of the feasibility study for the Construction and equipping of an aerial cable public transportation system” is underway.
From June to December, the investment was $1,487,217.16, and from January to May 2026, $1,183,013.65. The funding source is the Salvadoran Fund for Pre-Investment Studies (FOSEP).
Regarding the Los Planes de Renderos metrocable, it states that “the line design adjustment and detailing of civil works elements, economic-financial evaluation, and transaction model have been completed. Environmental and social impact study underway.” The investment between June 2025 and May 2026 has been $1,596,358, financed by the DUE (Special Law for the Contracting of Public Works and Essential Services with Financing Included).
As for the El Boquerón metrocable, which will run from El Boquerón to the Masferrer roundabout in Colonia Escalón, according to the MARN’s SEA, no details on its phases are mentioned in the annual report.

¿Cuánto ha invertido el MOP en la construcción del metrocable en San Salvador?

Desde que se iniciaron los trabajos del metrocable de Mejicanos en octubre de 2025, el Ministerio de Obras Públicas (MOP) ha invertido $55,990.000. Los primeros $20,014,111.60 se dieron como anticipo entre junio y diciembre de 2025, y los otros $35,975,888.40 se dieron previsionados entre enero y mayo de 2026.
“En ejecución. Construcción y equipamiento de sistema de transporte público por cable aéreo: Línea 2, distrito de Mejicanos, departamento de San Salvador”, detalla la tabla 71, de la Memoria de Labores junio 2025 – mayo 2026, publicada el 31 de julio de 2026. La fuente de financiamiento es el Gobierno de El Salvador (GOES).
Este proyecto que es el de la Línea 2, estará conformado por 22 torres y 153 cabinas que transportarán a 3,500 pasajeros por hora desde Mejicanos hasta el Centro de San Salvador, a la altura del Hospital Materno Infantil 1º de Mayo del Instituto Salvadoreño del Seguro Social (ISSS), según la descripción del proyecto que se encuentra en el Sistema de Evaluación Ambiental del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (MARN).
El metrocable fue anunciado por primera vez a finales de septiembre de 2025, por el ministro de obras públicas, Romeo Rodríguez indicando que se llevaría 18 meses de construcción, iniciando en octubre de ese mismo año y cuyo plazo finaliza en enero de 2027. Sin embargo, lleva un avance del 41.88 %, de acuerdo a la memoria de labores.
De esta línea 2, LA PRENSA GRÁFICA publicó en primicia el 7 de febrero el proyecto cuando fue presentado a los habitantes de los edificios de la Colonia Zacamil, del distrito de Mejicanos, San Salvador Centro, popularmente conocidos como “los 400”.
Según testimonios de los habitantes, solo les anunciaron que la construcción de la torre 4, que es la única que está ubicada en una zona populosa, entre el edificio 23 y 24, iniciarían el 16 de febrero, y duraría 75 días sin haber sido consultados antes sobre el proyecto. Sin embargo, las finalizaron a inicios de julio.
Con el tiempo denunciaron las molestias por las obras y la tala de árboles de la zona, entre ellos un Maquilishuat, árbol nacional de El Salvador. Esta torre 4 forma parte de las 22 descritas en el proyector del MARN, sin embargo, el MOP publica en sus redes que son 23 torres.
En este mismo documento también se detalla que como acción interinstitucional, el Ministerio de Vivienda y el Fondo Nacional de Vivienda Popular (FONAVIPO), realizaron una adenda al MOP por $154,400.00.
En la descripción de la iniciativa desarrollada se detalla: “Adenda Número Trece al Convenio de Transferencia de Fondos desde FONAVIPO y el Ministerio de Vivienda que dio como resultado los “reasentamientos del proyecto denominado Construcción y equipamiento del sistema de transporte público por cable aéreo, Línea 2…”.
Otros proyectos de metrocables
Esta es la primera vez que el MOP publica sobre el dinero invertido en el metrocable. Además, de la línea 2 de Mejicanos, menciona que la línea 1 cuyo destino principal será Soyapango, está en ejecución la “realización del estudio de factibilidad de Construcción y equipamiento de sistema de transporte público por cable aéreo”.
De junio a diciembre tuvo una inversión de $1,487,217.16 y de enero a mayo de 2026, $1,183,013.65. La fuente de financiamiento es el Fondo Salvadoreño para Estudios de Preinversión (FOSEP).
Del metrocable de Los Planes de Renderos, se detalla que “ha finalizado el ajuste de diseño de línea y detalle de elementos de obra civil, evaluación económica financiera y modelo de transacción. En ejecución estudio de impacto ambiental y social”. La inversión entre junio 2025 y mayo de 2026 ha sido de 1,596,358, cuyo financiamiento es del DUE (Ley Especial para la Contratación de Obra Pública y Servicios Esenciales con Financiamiento Incluido).
Del metrocable El Boquerón que iniciará en El Boquerón y finalizará en el redondel Masferrer en la colonia Escalón, según el SEA del MARN, no se menciona ningún detalle de las fases en la memoria de labores.
