The record of ARENA presidential candidate Mayteé Iraheta is tarnished by two violations committed between 2017 and 2018, according to the records of the Government Ethics Tribunal (TEG) and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), the entities that issued the sanctions against her.

According to the TEG website, Iraheta was sanctioned in May 2017 for having intervened in the hiring of her sister as a technical assistant in the Legislative Assembly, where she served as a lawmaker for the department of Sonsonate (2015-2018 term).

“Legislative Assembly lawmaker Maytee Gabriela Iraheta Escalante has been sanctioned by the TEG for having violated the ethical duty to ‘recuse oneself from intervening or participating in matters in which they, their spouse, domestic partner, relatives within the fourth degree of consanguinity or second degree of affinity, or business partner, have a conflict of interest,’ as set out in Article 5, letter c) of the Government Ethics Law (LEG),” the institution states.

According to the information, Iraheta “actively intervened” in the hiring by requesting the inclusion of her sister among the people the Assembly would hire to support her in her duties as a lawmaker.

According to statements by Iraheta reported by Diario El Mundo on May 11, 2017, the sanctioned lawmaker acknowledged the violation and stated that her sister resigned from the position two months after being hired.

“I acted imprudently by interfering in the hiring of my sister,” she reportedly said at the time.

For this incident, the TEG imposed a fine of US$1,006.80.

Later, in January 2018, the TSE issued another sanction against her for engaging in early campaigning. According to public statements made at the time by the electoral prosecutor, in 2016 Iraheta put up a billboard in Izalco allegedly for tourism purposes, but which advertised her profile.

The advertising was reportedly renewed until November 2017, when the country was already in the run-up to the 2018 electoral process, in which the then-lawmaker ran for reelection. By keeping the advertising up until that date, the TSE determined she had started ahead of the campaign period, which was set to begin in January 2018.

The amount of the sanction was not disclosed, but according to magistrate Miguel Angel Cardoza at the time, it would be between 5,000 and 10,000 colones.

This news outlet asked ARENA for a statement from the party and the candidate regarding her record, but as of the publication of this article, it had received no response.

Candidata presidencial de ARENA fue sancionada por Tribunal de Ética y TSE entre 2017 y 2018

El expediente de candidata presidencial de ARENA, Mayteé Iraheta, está manchado por dos faltas cometidas entre 2017 y 2018, según los registros del Tribunal de Ética Gubernamental (TEG) y el Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE), entidades que emitieron las sanciones en su contra.

De acuerdo con el portal web del TEG, Iraheta fue sancionada en mayo de 2017, por haber intervenido en la contratación de su hermana como asistente técnica en la Asamblea Legislativa, donde ella ejercía como diputada por el departamento de Sosonate (periodo 2015-2018).

“La diputada de la Asamblea Legislativa, Maytee Gabriela Iraheta Escalante, ha sido sancionada por el TEG, por haber infringido el deber ético de ‘excusarse de intervenir o participar en asuntos en los cuales él, su cónyuge, conviviente, parientes dentro del cuarto grado de consanguinidad o segundo de afinidad o socio, tengan algún conflicto de interés’, regulado en el artículo 5 letra c) de la Ley de Ética Gubernamental (LEG)”, señala la institución.

Según la información, Iraheta “intervino activamente” en la contratación, al solicitar la inclusión de su hermana entre la personas que la Asamblea contrataría para apoyarle en sus funciones de diputada.

Según declaraciones de Iraheta, recogidas por Diario El Mundo el 11 de mayo del 2017, la sancionada aceptó la falta y afirmó que su hermana renunció del cargo dos meses después de su contratación. “

Cometí una imprudencia al interferir en la contratación de mi hermana”, habría dicho en ese momento.

Por este evento, el TEG le impuso una multa de US$1,006.80.

Posteriormente, en enero de 2018, el TSE emitió otra sanción en su contra por incurrir en campaña adelantada. De acuerdo con las declaraciones públicas que dio entonces la fiscal electoral, en 2016 Iraheta colocó una valla en Izalco presuntamente con fines turísticos, pero donde publicitaba su perfil.

La publicidad habría sido renovada hasta noviembre de 2017, cuando el país ya se encontraba en la antesala del proceso electoral 2018, en el que la entonces diputada se postuló a la reelección. Al mantener la publicidad hasta esa fecha, el TSE consideró que se adelantó al plazo de campaña, que debía iniciar en enero de 2018.

El monto de la sanción no se dio a conocer, pero según indicó entonces el magistrado Miguel Angel Cardoza, estaría entre los 5, 000 y 10,000 colones.

Este medio solicitó a ARENA una postura del partido y la candidata sobre los antecedentes, pero hasta la publicación de esta nota no tuvo respuesta.
