The Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) party presented Mayteé Iraheta and Verónica Henríquez on Sunday, July 26, as its precandidate ticket for the presidency and vice presidency of the Republic, respectively, ahead of the 2027 elections.
The official presentation took place at the Centro Profesional Roosevelt, in the Flor Blanca neighborhood of San Salvador, at the start of the party’s internal election day, during which both must be ratified by the party base.
Iraheta is a lawyer and media professional. She served as a seated lawmaker for the department of Sonsonate in the Legislative Assembly for two terms (2015–2018 and 2018–2021). Henríquez, meanwhile, is an agricultural engineer and campaign vice president of COENA.
ARENA president Carlos García Saade accompanied the hopefuls and highlighted that Iraheta becomes the first woman to seek the party’s presidential candidacy.
“She is the first woman candidate for president for ARENA,” he stated.
In the history of the political party, Ana Vilma de Escobar was part of a presidential ticket as the candidate for the vice presidency, an office she held between 2004 and 2009.
After the presentation, journalists from La Prensa Gráfica attempted to ask the precandidates questions; however, access for interviews was not allowed. Party staff explained that both were in a hurry and would respond to the media later.
The internal election day was also marked by signs of tension within the party. In the morning, lawmaker Marcela Villatoro, who is seeking reelection to the Legislative Assembly, and Alejandro Nóchez, a precandidate for lawmaker for the municipality of San Salvador Centro, arrived at the voting center.
Nóchez questioned the fact that fellow precandidate for mayor of San Salvador Centro, Ondina Ramos, knew in advance who would be presented as the aspirants for the presidency and vice presidency, while he did not.
The party’s internal elections are being held this Sunday to determine the candidates who will compete in the 2027 elections for the presidency of the Republic, the Legislative Assembly, and municipal councils.

El partido Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (ARENA) presentó este domingo 26 de julio a Mayteé Iraheta y Verónica Henríquez como su fórmula de precandidatas a la presidencia y vicepresidencia de la República, respectivamente, de cara a las elecciones de 2027.
La presentación oficial se realizó en el Centro Profesional Roosevelt, en la colonia Flor Blanca, en San Salvador, durante el inicio de la jornada de elecciones internas del partido, en la que ambas deberán ser ratificadas por la militancia.
Iraheta es abogada y comunicadora. Fue diputada propietaria del departamento de Sonsonate en la Asamblea Legislativa en dos periodos (2015-2018 y 2018-2021). Mientras, Henríquez es ingeniera agrónoma y vicepresidenta de campaña del COENA.
El presidente de ARENA Carlos García Saade, acompañó a las aspirantes y destacó que Iraheta se convierte en la primera mujer que busca la candidatura presidencial del partido.
“Es la primera mujer candidata a presidenta por Arena”, afirmó.
En la historia del instituto político, Ana Vilma de Escobar integró una fórmula presidencial como candidata a la Vicepresidencia, cargo que ocupó entre 2004 y 2009.
Tras la presentación, periodistas de La Prensa Gráfica intentaron formular preguntas a las precandidatas; sin embargo, no se permitió el acceso para entrevistas. Personal del partido argumentó que ambas se encontraban apresuradas y que responderían posteriormente a los medios de comunicación.
La jornada interna también estuvo marcada por señales de tensiones dentro del partido. Por la mañana acudieron al centro de votación la diputada Marcela Villatoro, quien busca la reelección para la Asamblea Legislativa, y Alejandro Nóchez, precandidato a diputado por la municipalidad de San Salvador Centro.
Nóchez cuestionó que la también precandidata a alcaldesa por San Salvador Centro, Ondina Ramos, conociera con anticipación quiénes serían presentadas como aspirantes a la Presidencia y Vicepresidencia, mientras que él no.
Las elecciones internas del partido se desarrollan este domingo para definir a los candidatos que competirán en los comicios de 2027 por la Presidencia de la República, la Asamblea Legislativa y los concejos municipales.
