The health of Salvadoran lawyer Ruth López, a critic of Nayib Bukele’s government, has deteriorated to the point that her family fears for her life, a sister who visited her for the first time since she was detained a year ago said on Thursday (02.07.2026).
López, considered a “prisoner of conscience” by Amnesty International, was arrested on May 18, 2025, accused of illicit enrichment by the Attorney General’s Office, which is aligned with the right-wing president.
Prior to her arrest, the 48-year-old lawyer had denounced human rights violations and alleged corruption by Bukele’s government.
“She has an evident deterioration in her state of health,” Claudia López stated in a video, noting that she was able to see her sister “recently.” The lawyer had been barred from receiving visitors.
According to that testimony, shared by the NGO Cristosal, López underwent surgery for a three-centimeter tumor without the family knowing the results of the biopsy.
Relatives were also not informed of the surgery, as reported on May 19 by Cristosal, the organization to which the lawyer belongs.
López has spent most of the time incommunicado and without access to her case file, as the case was declared secret under the state of exception.
She also has “excessively high triglyceride levels” with a “risk of suffering a heart attack, a stroke, pancreatitis (…), which could result in death,” her sister warned.
“We urge the Salvadoran state to guarantee her health and to provide us with the results of all the tests,” López added.
Recently, a group of Democratic lawmakers asked the United States government to intercede for the “immediate” release of the lawyer and demanded that an embassy representative visit her in prison.
Bukele is a close ally of President Donald Trump.

La salud de la abogada salvadoreña Ruth López, crítica del gobierno de Nayib Bukele, se ha deteriorado al punto que la familia teme por su vida, dijo el jueves (02.07.2026) una hermana que la visitó por primera vez desde que fue detenida hace un año.
López, considerada una “presa de conciencia” por Amnistía Internacional, fue arrestada el 18 de mayo de 2025 acusada de enriquecimiento ilícito por la Fiscalía afín al mandatario derechista.
Previo a su arresto, la abogada de 48 años había denunciado violaciones de derechos humanos y presunta corrupción del gobierno de Bukele.
“Tiene un evidente deterioro de su estado de salud”, afirmó en un video Claudia López, quien, dijo, pudo ver a su hermana “recientemente”. La abogada tenía prohibidas las visitas.
Según ese testimonio, compartido por la oenegé Cristosal, López fue operada de un tumor de tres centímetros sin que la familia conozca los resultados de la biopsia.
Los parientes tampoco fueron informados de la cirugía, según denunció el pasado 19 de mayo Cristosal, organización a la que pertenece la abogada.
López ha permanecido la mayor parte del tiempo incomunicada y sin acceso a su expediente, ya que el caso fue declarado secreto bajo el estado de excepción.
También presenta “niveles demasiado elevados de triglicéridos” con “riesgo de sufrir un infarto, un accidente cerebrovascular, una pancreatitis (…), lo que puede traer como consecuencia la muerte”, advirtió la hermana.
“Instamos al Estado salvadoreño a que garantice su salud y que nos entregue los resultados de todos los exámenes”, añadió López.
Recientemente un grupo de congresistas demócratas pidió al gobierno de Estados Unidos interceder por la liberación “inmediata” de la abogada y exigió que un representante de la embajada la visitara en prisión.
Bukele es un estrecho aliado del presidente Donald Trump.
