Mario José Flamenco Rivas announced yesterday his resignation from the position of executive director of the Salvadoran government’s Artificial Intelligence Agency (ANIA), to go work in the field of “energy and infrastructure construction,” he announced on social media.
He held the position since June 2025 when he was appointed to the ANIA.
Flamenco Rivas was an official at the Salvadoran government’s National Bitcoin Office and a year ago was appointed executive director of the ANIA; at the Bitcoin Office, he led educational programs on bitcoin.
As director of the ANIA, he stated that his goal was training in artificial intelligence. The ANIA in El Salvador has the authority to maintain a National Registry of artificial intelligence developers and operators, define a risk assessment framework and requirements for systems handling confidential data, data under seal, or personal data, in addition to establishing the requirements for the operator registration process and security criteria.
Yesterday, in his message shared on X, Flamenco Rivas stated that he is answering “a higher calling” related to energy and infrastructure construction, without giving further details, but asserting that “all progress” begins with “the intelligent direction of energy.” “Without energy, there can be no sustained progress or lasting prosperity,” he expressed.
“I have not chosen the easy path, because there is no easy path to greatness. What I have chosen is the necessary path,” he indicated.
The official did not reveal what his energy plans are or whether they are related to his work in artificial intelligence and at the National Bitcoin Office.
However, the photograph posted by the former ANIA director matches the image published in January by elpunteo.com, which reported that SBI Crypto is exploring bitcoin mining with volcanic energy in El Salvador, upon receiving a visit from SBI Crypto CEO Nick Vitalis and the CEO of Wiz & Associates, alongside representatives from the ANIA and the National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC) during a technical inspection of the Ahuachapán geothermal power plant.
It is, according to the news outlet, a pilot project in which a mining container would be installed inside the Ahuachapán plant.

Mario José Flamenco Rivas anunció ayer su renuncia del cargo de director ejecutivo de la Agencia de Inteligencia Artificial (ANIA) del gobierno salvadoreño, para pasar a laborar en el campo de la “energía y la construcción de infraestructura”, anunció en redes sociales.
Ocupó el cargo desde junio de 2025 cuando fue nombrado en la ANIA.
Flamenco Rivas fue oficial de la Oficina Nacional del Bitcoin del gobierno salvadoreño y hace un año fue nombrado director ejecutivo de la ANIA, en la Oficina del Bitcoin lideró programas educativos sobre el bitcoin.
Como director de la ANIA aseguró que su objetivo era la formación en Inteligencia Artificial. La ANIA en El Salvador tiene la facultad de poseer un Registro Nacional de desarrolladores y operadores de inteligencia artificial, definir un marco de evaluación de riesgos y requisitos para sistemas que manejan datos confidenciales, reservados o personales, además de establecer los requisitos para el trámite de registro de operadores y criterios de seguridad.
Ayer, en su mensaje compartido en X, Flamenco Rivas aseguró que obedece a “un llamado mayor” relacionado a la energía y a la construcción de infraestructura, sin dar más detalles, pero sí asegurando que “todo avance” inicia de “la dirección inteligente de la energía”. “Sin energía no puede haber progreso sostenido ni prosperidad duradera”, expresó.
“No he elegido el camino fácil, porque no hay camino fácil hacia la grandeza. Lo que he elegido es el camino necesario”, indicó.
El funcionario no reveló cuáles son sus planes energéticos o si están relacionados con su trabajo en Inteligencia Artificial y en la Oficina Nacional del Bitcoin.
Sin embargo, la fotografía publicada por el exdirector de la ANIA coincide con la imagen publicada en enero por elpunteo.com en la cual se informa que SBI Crypto explora minería de bitcoin con energía volcánica en El Salvador, al recibir la visita del CEO de SBI Crypto, Nick Vitalis, y el CEO de Wiz & Associates, junto a representantes de la ANIA y de la Oficina Nacional del Bitcoin (ONBTC) en una inspección técnica de la central geotérmica de Ahuachapán.
Se trata, según el medio, de un proyecto piloto en el cual se instalaría un contenedor de minería dentro de la central de Ahuachapán.
