The First Criminal Chamber of San Salvador ruled that former President Alfredo Cristiani must continue facing criminal proceedings for the massacre of the Jesuits at the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA), which took place in November 1989.
According to the ruling, the judges rejected a motion filed by the former president’s defense, which argued that the proceedings should be halted because the facts of the case had already been adjudicated by the Spanish courts. The Chamber concluded that the judicial actions carried out in Spain did not constitute a definitive trial on Cristiani’s criminal responsibility, and therefore there is no impediment to the case continuing in El Salvador.
A judicial source connected to the proceedings confirmed the information and noted that the case will continue before the Fourth Sentencing Court of San Salvador, where former lawmaker Rodolfo Parker and several former military officers are also being tried for crimes related to the murder of six Jesuit priests and two UCA staff members.
The case was reopened in February 2022 by the Second Investigative Court of San Salvador, after the Attorney General’s Office sought the annulment of a dismissal issued by the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court in 2020, when the proceedings were closed. In March of this year, the Fourth Sentencing Court scheduled the start of the public trial against the 11 defendants, including Cristiani, for July 20.
Cámara avala continuar con juicio por masacre de jesuitas

La Cámara Primera de lo Penal de San Salvador resolvió que el expresidente Alfredo Cristiani continúe enfrentando el proceso penal por la masacre de los jesuitas de la Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA), ocurrida en noviembre de 1989.
Según la resolución, los magistrados rechazaron un recurso presentado por la defensa del exmandatario, que sostenía que el proceso debía detenerse porque los hechos ya habían sido conocidos por la justicia española. La Cámara concluyó que las acciones judiciales desarrolladas en España no constituyeron un juicio definitivo sobre la responsabilidad penal de Cristiani, por lo que no existe un impedimento para que el caso continúe en El Salvador.
Una fuente judicial vinculada al proceso confirmó la información y mencionó que el expediente seguirá su curso en el Tribunal Cuarto de Sentencia de San Salvador, donde también son procesados el exdiputado Rodolfo Parker y varios exmilitares por delitos relacionados con el asesinato de seis sacerdotes jesuitas y dos colaboradoras de la UCA.
El caso fue reabierto en febrero de 2022 por el Juzgado Segundo de Instrucción de San Salvador, luego de que la Fiscalía promoviera la anulación de un sobreseimiento dictado por la Sala de lo Penal en 2020 cuando se cerró el proceso. En marzo de este año, el Tribunal Cuarto de Sentencia programó para el 20 de julio próximo el inicio de la vista pública contra los 11 imputados, entre ellos Cristiani.
