Representatives of political parties on the Electoral Oversight Board (JVE) asked the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to remove former lawmaker and political commentator Romeo Auerbach from the position he has held at the agency since May.
According to members of the oversight body, during a meeting last Tuesday with TSE President Roxana Soriano, the parties on the JVE—with the exception of the PDC and Nuevas Ideas—raised their concerns regarding Auerbach’s role at the electoral agency. The representatives warned the authorities about the negative comments he makes on social media and talk shows about the political opposition.
“The directors asked that he be fired because he’s at the TSE and makes statements against certain parties. What was said is that because he’s at the tribunal, he can’t be making those kinds of statements,” said Carlos Martínez of Vamos.
Auerbach was hired in May as a coordinator within the Electoral Organization Directorate (DOE). According to TSE sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity so as not to affect their jobs, the position was created and approved by the magistrates on the collegiate body and reportedly carries a $3,000 salary.
Auerbach’s hiring has generated controversy not only because of the openly pro-government stance he expresses as a political commentator, but also because his hiring would violate the provisions of the voluntary retirement decree he opted into in February 2022. As the sources explained, the regulations establish a five-year period during which beneficiaries cannot return to the institution. That period would expire for Auerbach in February 2027, according to official documents regarding his retirement.
Irvin Sorto of the FMLN said that, in his personal opinion, Auerbach’s hiring “taints the electoral process, the transparency, and the good management shown by the current president. I told her that we can’t allow the hiring of a pseudo-analyst who voices opinions against parties that aren’t part of the ruling party, because that raises doubts for us about what he might be thinking or might be carrying out,” he stated.
According to the JVE, the presiding magistrate indicated that Auerbach was hired after submitting his paperwork during a call for applications and that he does not hold a position of trust.
“We’re going to audit that when the time comes, but as of today, in my case, as the FMLN representative, we don’t have the slightest confidence in him, and we urge the tribunal and the president to remove him, because he taints the electoral process and the transparency she has provided up to this point,” Sorto stated on the matter.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA asked Soriano about Auerbach’s hiring and also wrote to the former lawmaker for his stance on the allegations against him, but received no response.
“She (the TSE president) said she would take the comments into account, just that, that she would take them into account. The DOE director was also there; he was listening to everything that was said,” Martínez said of Soriano’s reaction.

Partidos políticos piden a TSE destituir a exdiputado Romeo Auerbach de cargo como coordinador de Organización Electoral

Representantes de partidos políticos ante la Junta de Vigilancia Electoral (JVE) pidieron al Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE) destituir al exdiputado y comentarista político Romeo Auerbach del cargo que ostenta desde mayo en el organismo.
Según indicaron miembros del ente fiscalizador, durante una reunión el pasado martes con la presidenta del TSE, Roxana Soriano, los partidos de la JVE -a excepción del PDC y Nuevas Ideas- plantearon sus preocupaciones en torno al rol de Auerbach en el ente electoral. Los representantes advirtieron a las autoridades de los comentarios negativos que expresa en redes sociales y programas de entrevista sobre la oposición política.
“Los directores pidieron que lo despidan porque él está en el TSE y da declaraciones en contra de ciertos partidos. Lo que se dijo es que él por estar en el tribunal no puede estar dando ese tipo de declaraciones”, dijo Carlos Martínez, de Vamos.
Auerbach fue contratado en mayo en el cargo de coordinador dentro de la Dirección de Organización Electoral (DOE). Según indicaron fuentes del TSE, bajo condición de anonimato para no afectar su trabajo, el cargo fue creado y aprobado por los magistrados en el organismo colegiado y tendría un salario de $3,000.
La contratación de Auerbach ha generado controversia no solo debido a la postura favorable al oficialismo que abiertamente expresa como comentarista político, sino también porque su contratación vulneraría lo establecido en el decreto de retiro voluntario al que se acogió en febrero de 2022. Según explicaron las fuentes, la normativa establece un periodo de cinco años en los que los beneficiados no pueden volver a la institución. Ese periodo vencería en febrero de 2027 para Auerbach, según documentos oficiales sobre su retiro.
Irvin Sorto, del FMLN, dijo que, en su opinión personal, la contratación de Auerbach “viene a ensuciar el proceso electoral, la transparencia, y buena gestión mostrada por la actual presidenta. Yo se lo dije, que la contratación de un pseudoanalista que da opiniones en contra de los partidos que no son del oficialismo no lo podemos permitir, porque eso a nosotros nos genera dudas de lo que puede él estar pensando o puede estar ejecutando”, indicó.
Según la JVE, la magistrada presidenta indicó que Auerbach fue contratado tras presentar su documentación en una convocatoria de personal y que no ejerce ningún cargo de confianza.
“Eso nosotros lo vamos a fiscalizar en su momento, pero hoy por hoy, en mi caso, como representante del FMLN, no tenemos la más mínima confianza en él e instamos al tribunal y a la presidenta a que lo quite, porque ensucia el proceso electoral y la transparencia que hasta este momento ella está brindando”, indicó Sorto al respecto.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA consultó a Soriano sobre la contratación de Auerbach y también escribió al exdiputado para conocer su postura sobre los señalamientos en su contra, pero no obtuvo respuestas.
“Ella (presidenta del TSE) dijo que tomaría en cuenta los comentarios, solo eso, que lo tomaría en cuenta. Ahí estaba también el director de la DOE, él estuvo escuchando todo lo que se dijo”, dijo Martínez sobre la reacción de Soriano.
