A hundredweight of potatoes will sell at a price ranging between $45 and $50 in the coming weeks, ad honorem Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Óscar Domínguez announced Saturday, after detecting price increases.
The deputy minister stated on social media that his office had detected “disproportionate prices” in the sale of imported potatoes.
“We understand that weather conditions have caused a slight increase in the price of potatoes. However, we will not allow abuses. We have domestic potatoes with clear costs and guaranteed quality,” the official said.
He added that the cap would be temporary, until the harvest comes in over the next 15 days.
This week, Mateo Rendón, coordinator of the Agricultural, Rural, and Indigenous Roundtable, said the group had planted in 10 areas where rains persisted during the hot spell in late April and May, and that the harvest would be enough to supply the country during the upcoming dry period between August and September.
He also announced that potato sales would be set up next Monday in locations where price gouging has been detected.

El quintal de papa se venderá a un precio que oscilará entre los $45 y $50 durante las próximas semanas, anunció este sábado el viceministro ad-honoren de Agricultura y Ganadería, Óscar Domínguez, luego de detectar incrementos en los precios.
El viceministro expuso en redes sociales que habían detectado «precios desproporcionados» en la venta de papa extranjera.
«Entendemos que las condiciones climáticas han generado una leve alza en el precio de la papa. Sin embargo, no permitiremos abusos. Contamos con papa nacional, con costos claros y de calidad garantizada», señaló el funcionario.
Y añadió que el precio será temporal, mientras sale la cosecha en los próximos 15 días.
Esta semana, el coordinador de la Mesa Agropecuaria, Rural e Indígena, Mateo Rendón, aseguró que han sembrado en 10 zonas donde las lluvias persistieron, durante la temporada de calor a finales de abril y mayo, y que dicha cosecha será suficiente para abastecer al país durante el próximo período seco entre agosto y septiembre.
También anunció que el próximo lunes instalarán venta de papas en los lugares donde se ha detectado abuso en los precios.
