The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) awarded the 2026 News & Documentary Emmy in the “Outstanding Investigative Journalism Coverage in Spanish” category to “Surviving CECOT,” the collaborative investigation produced by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune alongside Alianza Rebelde Investiga — made up of Runrun.es, El Pitazo, and Tal Cual — and Cazadores de Fake News. The awards ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 27, at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York.
The award was accepted by Gerardo de Valle, the project’s producer and editor, who opened his acceptance speech by highlighting the collaborative work. “Investigative journalism is never a solo endeavor,” he said.
De Valle also thanked Almudena Toral, executive producer of documentaries and audiovisual projects, and Ginger Thompson, editor in chief, both of ProPublica, for entrusting him with the work of telling complex stories and for reviewing every frame to ensure the accuracy of the material. He likewise recognized the project’s authors — Perla Trevizo of The Texas Tribune; Melissa Sánchez and Mica Rosenberg, both of ProPublica; Ronna Rísquez, coordinator of Alianza Rebelde Investiga; and Adrián González, director of Cazadores de Fake News — for generously sharing their experience and knowledge, and he dedicated a few words to the team in Venezuela that worked tirelessly to obtain the footage and maintain contact with the detainees’ families.
“Surviving CECOT” tells the stories of three Venezuelans — Juan José Ramos Ramos, Andry Blanco Bonilla, and Wilmer Vega Sandia — deported by the Trump administration to the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) in El Salvador on March 15, 2025, and labeled as Tren de Aragua members with no evidence presented. The broader investigation covered 238 of the men transferred that day, reviewed court records in the United States and South America, and documented that at least 197 had no criminal conviction in the U.S. and that nearly half were deported while their immigration cases were still pending.
Cazadores’ contribution included forensically tracing open-source digital evidence to verify the backgrounds of the 238 men on the list published by CBS News. The 238 detainees were released on July 18, 2025, and sent back to Venezuela as part of a prisoner exchange, with no explanation from the U.S. government regarding their detention or release.
This 2026 News & Documentary Emmy joins the 2026 Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics and the 2026 National Magazine Award in the Public Interest category, presented by ASME on May 19 in New York — three honors for the same transnational investigation.

“Sobreviviendo al CECOT” gana un Emmy de Noticias y Documentales 2026
La Academia Nacional de Artes y Ciencias de la Televisión de Estados Unidos (National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, NATAS) entregó el Emmy de Noticias y Documentales 2026 en la categoría «Cobertura periodística investigativa destacada en Español» a “Sobreviviendo al CECOT”, la investigación colaborativa producida por ProPublica y The Texas Tribune junto a la Alianza Rebelde Investiga —integrada por Runrun.es, El Pitazo y Tal Cual— y Cazadores de Fake News. La ceremonia de premiación tuvo lugar este miércoles 27 de mayo, en el Jazz at Lincoln Center de Nueva York.
El premio lo recibió Gerardo de Valle, productor y editor del proyecto, quien abrió su discurso de aceptación resaltando el trabajo colaborativo. “El periodismo de investigación nunca es una tarea en solitario”, dijo.
De Valle también agradeció a Almudena Toral, Productora Ejecutiva de documentales y proyectos audiovisuales y a Ginger Thompson Editora en Jefe, ambas de Propublica, por confiarle el trabajo de contar historias complejas y por revisar cada fotograma para garantizar la precisión del material. De igual forma, reconoció a los autores del proyecto, Perla Trevizo de The Texas Tribune; Melissa Sánchez y Mica Rosenberg, ambas de Propublica; Ronna Rísquez coordinadora de la Alianza Rebelde Investiga; y Adrián González, director de Cazadores de Fake News, por compartir generosamente su experiencia y conocimiento, y dedicó palabras al equipo en Venezuela que trabajó sin descanso para obtener las imágenes y mantener el contacto con las familias de los detenidos.
“Sobreviviendo al CECOT” narra las historias de tres venezolanos —Juan José Ramos Ramos, Andry Blanco Bonilla y Wilmer Vega Sandia— deportados por la administración Trump al Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) en El Salvador el 15 de marzo de 2025, señalados como miembros del Tren de Aragua sin que se presentaran pruebas. La investigación más amplia cubrió a 238 de los hombres trasladados ese día, revisó expedientes judiciales en Estados Unidos y Sudamérica, y documentó que al menos 197 no tenían condena por ningún delito en ese país y que casi la mitad fue deportada con procesos migratorios aún en curso.
La contribución de Cazadores incluyó el rastreo forense de evidencia digital en fuentes abiertas para verificar los antecedentes de los 238 hombres de la lista publicada por CBS News. Los 238 detenidos fueron liberados el 18 de julio de 2025 y enviados de vuelta a Venezuela en el marco de un intercambio de prisioneros, sin que el gobierno estadounidense ofreciera explicaciones sobre su detención ni su liberación.
Este Emmy de Noticias y Documentales 2026 se suma al Premio Anthony Shadid de Ética Periodística 2026 y al National Magazine Award 2026 en la categoría de Interés Público, entregado por la ASME el pasado 19 de mayo en Nueva York, tres reconocimientos a la misma investigación transnacional.
