Unidentified workers began felling trees on May 26 to build the new International Fair and Convention Center (CIFCO) on the El Espino estate, between San Salvador and Antiguo Cuscatlán. The government of the People’s Republic of China, which donated the project, stated that only 30% of the land will be used; the remaining 70% will be set aside for a large green, ecological, and recreational area, it asserted.
Before work began, around 250 trees up to ten meters tall had been marked for felling.
According to a resident of an adjacent neighborhood, tree felling began on May 26.

Agoutis, raccoons, armadillos, opossums, black iguanas, various types of lizards, insects, and dozens of bird species inhabit the El Espino estate.
Neighbors in the area also reported on social media a steady migration of animals since the work began.
The Legislative Assembly approved the construction of the venue on a significant portion of the El Espino estate in July 2025.
According to environmental assessments, El Salvador is the second most deforested country in the Central American region, facing severe problems with water, deforestation, and food insecurity.
At the same time, social and environmental organizations are collecting one million signatures against the construction of the project.

Obreros no identificados iniciaron el 26 de mayo pasado la tala de árboles para construir el nuevo Centro Internacional de Ferias y Convenciones (CIFCO) en la finca El Espino, entre San Salvador y Antiguo Cuscatlán. El Gobierno de la República Popular China, que ha donado el proyecto, aseguró que se ocupará únicamente el 30% del terreno; el 70% restante será destinado a una amplia área verde, ecológica y de convivencia, según aseveró.
Previo al inicio de los trabajos se habían marcado alrededor de 250 árboles de hasta diez metros de altura para ser talados.
Según un habitante de una residencial aledaña al sector, la tala de árboles inició el pasado 26 de mayo.

Según balances ambientales, El Salvador es el segundo país más deforestado de la región centroamericana, con graves problemas hídricos, de deforestación e inseguridad alimentaria.
Al mismo tiempo, organizaciones sociales y ambientales realizan la recolección de un millón de firmas en contra de la construcción del proyecto.
