Legal Humanitarian Aid has recorded 530 deaths in El Salvador’s prisons since the start of the state of exception. Last Wednesday, May 27, the Legislative Assembly approved the 51st extension of the state of exception.

Ingrid Escobar, of Legal Humanitarian Aid, explained that the number of deaths in state custody is calculated based on people facing charges who have not had access to a fair trial. She clarified that convicted gang members are not included.

The advocate pointed out that the human right to life, established in Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by El Salvador, is being violated.

She added that the same covenant also prohibits torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. In her view, this covenant is being violated in the country, along with other international treaties.

Escobar summarized that the actions of the Salvadoran state constitute conduct typical of “crimes against humanity.”

Legal Humanitarian Aid indicated that 94% of those who died did not fit the profile of gang members. The organization warned that the figure could rise but that efforts are being made to conceal it through mass trials.

Socorro Jurídico registra 530 fallecidos en el régimen de excepción

El Socorro Jurídico Humanitario contabiliza 530 muertes en las cárceles de El Salvador desde el inicio del régimen de excepción. El pasado miércoles 27 de mayo la Asamblea Legislativa aprobó la 51° prórroga del régimen.

Ingrid Escobar, del Socorro Jurídico, explicó que la cifra de muertes en custodia del Estado se calcula con base en personas procesadas que no han tenido acceso a un juicio justo. Aclaró que no se incluyen pandilleros condenados.

La defensora señaló que se está violando el derecho humano a la vida establecido en el artículo 6 del Pacto Internacional de Derechos Civiles y Políticos, ratificado por El Salvador.

Además, dijo que en el mismo pacto también se prohíbe la tortura, los tratos crueles, inhumanos o degradantes. En su opinión, dicho pacto se está violentando en el país, así como otros tratados internacionales.

Escobar resume que las acciones del Estado salvadoreño son conductas típicas de “delitos de lesa humanidad”.

Socorro Jurídico Humanitario indicó que el 94% de las personas fallecidas no tenían perfil de pandilleros. Advirtió que la cifra podría aumentar, pero se busca ocultar por medio de juicios masivos.
