Relatives and the legal defense team of attorney Ruth Eleonora López have asked the Salvadoran State to guarantee her health, after learning that she was admitted to a hospital in San Salvador and underwent a procedure last Saturday, May 16. They stated that they were not officially notified about the transfer, the reason for the procedure, or her current health status.
According to a statement released Tuesday afternoon, the parties acknowledged the importance of the attorney receiving timely medical care and, at the same time, being provided with “precise” information about her health, as well as ensuring her lawyers have access to her medical file to guarantee this right.
“We request the immediate release of Ruth López, in order to guarantee her right to health, allow her to be accompanied by her family, and comply with the recommendation of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which urged the Salvadoran State to review the legality and proportionality of her pretrial detention,” the statement reads.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA learned that López was transferred to the Hospital de La Mujer in San Salvador on Saturday and underwent surgery. This newspaper confirmed with judicial and hospital sources that she was discharged the same day and transferred back to the Izalco Prison Farm, where she is currently in detention.
Ruth López was arrested on May 18, 2025, and charged by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) with illicit enrichment in a case in which former Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) president Eugenio Chicas is also a defendant.
In December 2025, the Fourth Court of Instruction of San Salvador granted a six-month extension to the proceedings against López, which will expire in June 2026.
Familia pide que se garantice la salud de Ruth López

Familiares y la defensa técnica de la abogada Ruth Eleonora López han solicitado al Estado salvadoreño garantizar su salud, tras conocer que fue ingresada e intervenida en un centro hospitalario en San Salvador, el sábado 16 de mayo pasado. Mencionan que no fueron notificados de manera oficial sobre el traslado, el motivo de su intervención y el estado de salud en que se encuentra.
De acuerdo con un comunicado emitido la tarde de este martes, las partes reconocen la importancia de que la abogada tenga acceso a una atención médica oportuna y que, a la vez, se les proporcione información “precisa” sobre su estado de salud, así como que sus abogados cuenten con el acceso al expediente clínico para garantizar este derecho.
Solicitamos la libertad inmediata de Ruth López, a fin de garantizar su derecho a la salud, permitir que esté acompañada de su familia y dar cumplimiento a la recomendación de la CIDH, que instó al Estado salvadoreño a revisar la legalidad y proporcionalidad de su detención provisional”, cita el comunicado.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA tuvo conocimiento que López fue trasladada al Hospital de La Mujer, en San Salvador, el sábado e intervenida quirúrgicamente. Este medio confirmó, con fuentes judiciales y hospitalarias, que fue dada de alta ese mismo día y trasladada nuevamente a la Granja Penitenciaria de Izalco donde actualmente está en detención.
Ruth López fue capturada el 18 de mayo de 2025 y fue acusada por la Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) por el delito de enriquecimiento ilícito, en un proceso en el que también es acusado el expresidente del Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE), Eugenio Chicas.
En diciembre de 2025, el Tribunal Cuarto de Instrucción de San Salvador dio seis meses de prórroga al proceso contra López que se cumplirán en junio de 2026.
