Representatives of the Cristosal association stated at a press conference in Guatemala that the family of Ruth Eleonora López has no certainty about the health status of the lawyer, who was arrested in May and is reportedly being held in prison at the Izalco Penitentiary Farm in Sonsonate.

“The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has ordered that her health situation be monitored; to date, the State claims to assure that she is in stable health, that she is fine, but it does not support this situation with documents before the Inter-American Commission, which is why her family is in uncertainty about her real state of health and the State,” said lawyer David Morales, an attorney for Cristosal.

Cristosal’s executive director, Noah Bullock, also maintained that there is uncertainty about the health status of the head of Cristosal’s anti-corruption unit. “For us, it has been very painful that, in her year of detention, Ruth has faced almost permanent restrictions on access to her family, and the family has still not had access to information about Ruth’s health, which generates uncertainty and fear and pain in the family,” he said.

Bullock hopes the measures ordered by the IACHR for the Salvadoran State will be fulfilled, allowing her family visits, access to her defense, and a review of her pretrial detention.

For Abraham Ábrego, Cristosal’s legal director, there must be access to López’s health situation. “That has not been provided,” he stressed.

Ábrego also announced that they will file a complaint regarding the violations of Ruth López’s rights before the IACHR, a body where they had previously only requested precautionary measures. “That will be within the framework of our belief that it is a case the Commission needs to hear, not just the precautionary measures,” he explained.

López was arrested on Sunday, May 18, 2025, initially for the crime of embezzlement, which was later changed to illicit enrichment, related to cases involving former Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) magistrate Eugenio Chicas. According to the Attorney General’s Office, the lawyer “collaborated in the misappropriation of funds from State coffers” while Chicas served as presiding magistrate of the TSE and also when he was Secretary of Communications for the Presidency of the Republic. The prosecutorial body stated that day on X that the lawyer was Eugenio Chicas’s “trusted adviser and right hand.”

López served as Cristosal’s head of anti-corruption and justice legal affairs and has been one of the most critical voices against the government of Nayib Bukele. In December 2024, she was recognized as one of the 100 most inspiring and influential women in the world, according to the BBC in London.

Yesterday, the Cristosal association called for López to be released for the duration of the criminal proceedings, to have access to her case file and to a defense, as well as to have a public trial. Cristosal maintained that López was arrested without a warrant or prior investigation, was disappeared for 40 hours, faced a trial kept entirely under seal, and was denied the right to access a defense or consult her case file.

Cristosal’s executive director emphasized yesterday that the regime applied to gangs is now being applied “to any citizen,” including Ruth López and “thousands of innocent people.” He stated that in recent days they have received messages of support, including from people who have suffered political persecution in Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Familia de Ruth López tiene incertidumbre sobre su estado de salud según Cristosal

Representantes de la asociación Cristosal aseveraron en una conferencia de prensa en Guatemala que la familia de Ruth Eleonora López no tiene certeza del estado de la salud de la abogada, quien fue capturada en mayo y se mantendría en prisión en la Granja Penitenciaria de Izalco, en Sonsonate.

«La Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) ha ordenado que se le dé un seguimiento a su situación de salud, hasta hoy el Estado pretende asegurar que ella se encuentra en un nivel de salud estable, que se encuentra bien, pero no respalda con documentos ante la Comisión Interamericana esta situación, por lo cual su familia se encuentra en incertidumbre sobre su real estado de salud y el Estado», expresó el abogado David Morales, abogado de Cristosal.

El director ejecutivo de Cristosal, Noah Bullock, también sostuvo que hay incertidumbre sobre el estado de salud de la jefa de la unidad anticorrupción de Cristosal. «Para nosotros ha sido muy doloroso que Ruth en su año de detención ha tenido restricciones casi permanentes al acceso a la familia y la familia no ha tenido acceso todavía a la información sobre la salud de Ruth, lo cual genera incertidumbre y temor y dolor en la familia», expresó.

Bullock espera que se cumplan las medidas ordenadas por la CIDH al Estado salvadoreño para que le permita la visita familiar, acceso a su defensa y la revisión de la detención preliminar.

Para Abraham Ábrego, director legal de Cristosal, debe haber acceso a la situación de salud de López. «No se ha dado», subrayó.

Ábrego, además, anunció que denunciarán el caso de las violaciones de derechos de Ruth López en la CIDH, instancia en la cual únicamente solicitaron unas medidas cautelares. «Eso va a ser en el marco de que consideramos que es un caso que la Comisión tiene que conocer, no solo las medidas cautelares», explicó.

López fue detenida el domingo 18 de mayo de 2025, primero por el delito de peculado, que fue modificado a enriquecimiento ilícito, relacionada con casos del exmagistrado del Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE), Eugenio Chicas. Según la Fiscalía, la abogada «colaboró en la sustracción de fondos de las arcas del Estado» mientras Chicas se desempeñaba como magistrado presidente del TSE y también cuando fue secretario de Comunicaciones de la Presidencia de la República. El ente fiscal aseguró, ese día en X, que la abogada fue la «asesora de confianza y mano derecha de Eugenio Chicas».

López se desempeñaba como jefa jurídica anticorrupción y justicia de Cristosal y ha sido una de las voces más críticas del gobierno de Nayib Bukele. En diciembre de 2024, fue reconocida como una de las 100 mujeres más inspiradoras e influyentes del mundo, según la BBC de Londres.

La asociación Cristosal pidió ayer que López sea puesta en libertad mientras dure el proceso penal, que tenga acceso al expediente y a una defensa, así como a tener un juicio público. Cristosal sosstuvo que López fue detenida sin orden judicial ni investigación previa, desaparecida durante 40 horas, con un juicio bajo reserva total y sin derecho al acceso a defensa ni a consultar su expediente.

El director ejecutivo de Cristosal remarcó ayer que el régimen aplicado a las pandillas ahora se aplica «a cualquier ciudadano» incluida Ruth López y «miles de personas inocentes». Aseveró que en los últimos días han recibido mensajes de apoyo, incluidas personas que han sufrido persecución política en Nicaragua y Venezuela.
