The urban basic food basket (CBA) rose by $1.98 in March and reached its highest price in eight months, the National Office of Statistics and Censuses (Onec) reported.
The office, a division of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), reports that the urban basket increased for the third consecutive month to $254.64 in March, 0.78% more than the $252.6 it cost in February. With this adjustment, it reached its highest price since July 2025, when it cost $255.
The rural basket also increased by $1.93, rising from $183.52 in February to $185.45 in March. According to Onec, it reached its highest price since October of last year.
Onec reports that the urban food basket this past March was $8.84 more expensive than the $245.8 it cost in the same month of 2025, while the rural basket was $7.33 more expensive than the $178.12 reported in March of last year.
The increase in food prices had been anticipated by the BCR when it updated the March inflation results, an indicator that rose to 1.47% in the context of the conflict in the Middle East, which has driven up the price of oil.
According to the BCR, inflation in food and nonalcoholic beverages rose to 2.66% in March, the highest rate since August 2024.
Price of Tortillas, Meats, and Eggs Rises
In urban areas, Onec reports increases in portions of tortillas and meats — beef, pork, or poultry — as well as fats — oil, margarine, or shortening — eggs, fruits — orange, plantain, and banana — beans, and sugar. The cost of cooking, which represents 10% of the CBA (gas or electricity to prepare food), also became more expensive.
Meanwhile, there were reductions in portions of French bread and vegetables, which include potatoes, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, güisquil, or cabbage.
For its part, the portion of rice and fluid milk remained unchanged.
The rural basic basket includes fewer foods, such as French bread and vegetables. According to Onec, in this region the portions that rose most were tortillas, meats, fats, eggs, fruits, beans, sugar, and cooking.
Rice and milk also remained unchanged.
The increase in tortilla prices nationwide had also been confirmed in the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, which by March had accumulated 10 consecutive months of increases in this food.

La canasta básica alimentaria (CBA) urbana subió $1.98 en marzo y se colocó en su precio más alto en ocho meses, informó la Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (Onec).
La oficina, una división del Banco Central de Reserva (BCR), reporta que la canasta urbana aumentó por tercer mes consecutivo hasta $254.64 en marzo, un 0.78 % más frente a los $252.6 que costó en febrero. Con este ajuste, se ubicó en su precio más alto desde julio de 2025, cuando costó $255.
También en la zona rural aumentó $1.93, al pasar de $183.52 en febrero a $185.45 en marzo. De acuerdo con la Onec, se colocó en el precio más alto desde octubre del año pasado.
La Onec reporta que la canasta alimentaria urbana de marzo pasado fue $8.84 más cara que los $245.8 que costó en igual mes de 2025, mientras que la rural es $7.33 más cara frente a los $178.12 reportados en marzo del año pasado.
El aumento en los alimentos había sido previsto por el BCR cuando actualizó los resultados de la inflación de marzo, indicador que subió a 1.47 % en el contexto del conflicto en Medio Oriente, que ha impulsado el precio del petróleo.
De acuerdo con el BCR, la inflación de alimentos y bebidas no alcohólicas subió a 2.66 % en marzo, la tasa más alta desde agosto de 2024.
Sube precio de tortillas, carnes y huevos
En la zona urbana, la Onec reporta aumentos en las raciones de tortillas y carnes —res, cerdo o ave—, así como grasas —aceite, margarina o manteca—, huevos, frutas —naranja, plátano y guineo—, frijoles y azúcar. También se encareció el costo de la cocción, que representa el 10 % de la CBA (gas o electricidad para preparar alimentos).
En tanto, hubo reducciones en las raciones de pan francés y verduras, que abarcan papa, cebolla, chile verde, tomate, güisquil o repollo.
Por su parte, la ración de arroz y la leche fluida se mantuvieron sin cambios.
La canasta básica rural incluye menos alimentos, como el pan francés y las verduras. Según la Onec, en esta región aumentaron sobre todo las raciones de tortillas, carnes, grasas, huevos, frutas, frijoles, azúcar y cocción.
También el arroz y la leche se mantuvieron sin cambios.
El incremento de las tortillas a nivel nacional también había sido confirmado en el último informe del Índice de Precios al Consumidor (IPC), que a marzo acumuló 10 meses consecutivos de aumentos en este alimento.
