The Movement of Victims of the Regime (MOVIR) announced it will participate in the upcoming May 1 march to highlight its demands in the face of what it considers a lack of response from state institutions. The peaceful demonstration is scheduled to depart Cuscatlán Park at 8:00 a.m.

Movement spokesperson Samuel Ramírez said at a press conference that the mobilization represents “the only space” they have to voice their complaints and be heard.

Ramírez stated that no government entity has addressed their requests, which is why they decided to “take to the streets” to denounce what they describe as arbitrary arrests, as well as alleged attacks against international organizations that have flagged human rights violations in El Salvador.

The movement also clarified that it does not defend everyone who has been detained. According to Ramírez, this is an accusation that—he said—seeks to delegitimize their work. They maintain that their efforts focus on cases involving people they consider innocent who were arrested during the state of exception.

Since the implementation of the state of exception in 2022, the state has reported the arrest of more than 91,600 people accused of belonging to gangs or collaborating with these structures, according to data published by the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador on its website. Authorities have defended this measure as a key tool to reduce violence and strengthen public safety.

Meanwhile, human rights defender Mirna Perla noted that, as part of the mobilization, they will also demand the opening of military archives linked to past acts of violence, which—she stated—have contributed to impunity.

Perla added that the march also seeks to support other social demands, including complaints over street vendor evictions, damage to green spaces like El Espino, and opposition to mining projects. As of press time, no official response had been obtained from government officials regarding the movement’s claims.

MOVIR denuncia falta de respuesta estatal

El Movimiento de Víctimas del Régimen (MOVIR) anunció que participará en la marcha del próximo 1 de mayo para visibilizar sus demandas ante lo que consideran una falta de respuesta por parte de las instituciones del Estado. La manifestación pacífica está prevista para salir a las 8:00 de la mañana desde el Parque Cuscatlán.

El vocero del movimiento, Samuel Ramírez, señaló en conferencia de prensa que la movilización representa “el único espacio” que tienen para expresar sus denuncias y ser escuchados.

Ramírez afirmó que ninguna entidad gubernamental ha atendido sus solicitudes, por lo que decidieron “tomar las calles” para denunciar lo que califican como capturas arbitrarias, así como presuntos ataques contra organizaciones internacionales que han señalado violaciones a los derechos humanos en El Salvador.

El movimiento también aclaró que no defiende a la totalidad de las personas detenidas. Según Ramírez, esa es una acusación que —afirma— busca deslegitimar su labor. Sostienen que su trabajo se centra en casos que consideran de personas inocentes detenidas durante la vigencia del régimen de excepción.

Por su parte, la defensora de derechos humanos Mirna Perla indicó que, en el marco de la movilización, también exigirán la apertura de archivos militares vinculados a hechos de violencia del pasado, los cuales —afirmó— han contribuido a la impunidad.

Perla agregó que la marcha también busca respaldar otras demandas sociales, entre ellas denuncias por desalojos de vendedores, la afectación de zonas verdes como El Espino y la oposición a proyectos de explotación minera. Hasta el cierre de esta nota, no se había obtenido una postura oficial de funcionarios del Gobierno sobre los señalamientos del movimiento.
