Residents of the La Periquera canton in the district of Tecoluca, San Vicente Sur, reported access restrictions on the road leading to the community, which also leads to the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT). Locals said that a boom gate was installed over a month ago, limiting the movement of people who do not live in the area.
According to their accounts, the boom gate prevents visitors from entering, including people from other nearby communities who previously moved freely through the sector. The barrier, along with a guard booth, is located on the side of the highway connecting Zacatecoluca to San Vicente, approximately one kilometer south of the main entrance to the CECOT.
Residents who spoke on condition of anonymity said that to enter the community, their identity must be verified and they must have prior registration, which has led to restrictions even on community events.
They added that the limitations have affected social and organizational dynamics, including the commemoration of the La Cayetana massacre, which occurred in 1974 in that area. The event is remembered every year by local organizations, but according to residents, the access restrictions have made it difficult to hold these activities, which they consider historic.
“They asked us for lists with names and national ID numbers to allow entry, but that’s not feasible because in community events you don’t always know who will participate,” they said.
Residents also indicated that this situation has had economic repercussions, especially for owners of land and farms in the area, who say potential buyers have backed out due to the access restrictions.
In addition, they recalled that an eatery previously operated in the area where the boom gate now stands, frequented by security personnel stationed in the CECOT zone. LA PRENSA GRÁFICA contacted the communications unit of the Ministry of Justice by phone to request a comment on the residents’ complaints, but they did not respond.
Restringen paso hacia comunidad y zonas aledañas al CECOT en Tecoluca

Pobladores del cantón La Periquera, en el distrito de Tecoluca, San Vicente Sur, denunciaron restricciones de acceso para transitar en la calle hacia la comunidad y que también conduce hacia el Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT). Los pobladores dijeron que desde hace más de un mes ha sido instalada una pluma (barrera de paso) que limita la circulación de personas que no residen en la zona.
De acuerdo con los testimonios, la pluma impide el ingreso de visitantes e incluso de personas de otras comunidades de la zona que anteriormente transitaba libremente por el sector. La barrera, junto con una caseta de vigilancia, se ubica a un costado de la carretera que conecta Zacatecoluca con San Vicente, aproximadamente a un kilómetro al sur de la entrada principal del CECOT.
Pobladores que hablaron bajo anonimato aseguraron que para entrar a la comunidad su identidad debe ser verificada y deben tener registros previos lo que ha derivado en restricciones incluso para la celebración de actividades comunitarias.
Agregaron que las limitaciones han afectado dinámicas sociales y organizativas, entre estas, la conmemoración de la masacre de La Cayetana, ocurrida en 1974 en ese sector. El hecho es recordado cada año por organizaciones locales, pero según denunciaron, las restricciones de acceso han dificultado la realización de estas actividades, consideradas por los residentes como históricas.
“Nos pidieron listados con nombres y DUI para permitir el ingreso, pero eso no es viable porque en las actividades comunitarias no siempre se sabe quienes participarán”, dijeron.
Los habitantes también indicaron que esta situación ha tenido repercusiones económicas, especialmente para propietarios de terrenos y fincas en el sector, quienes aseguran que posibles compradores han desistido debido a las restricciones de acceso
Además, recordaron que en el área donde actualmente se encuentra la pluma funcionaba anteriormente un comedor que era frecuentado por personal de seguridad que permanece en la zona del CECOT. LA PRENSA GRÁFICA se comunicó vía telefónica con la unidad de comunicaciones del Ministerio de Justicia para solicitar su postura sobre las quejas de los pobladores, pero no respondieron.
