The president of the Medical Association of El Salvador (COLMEDES), Dr. Iván Solano Leiva, said this Monday, April 13, that there are currently no measles vaccines available in the private sector.
During a morning interview on Telecorporación Salvadoreña, Dr. Solano Leiva was asked whether vaccines against the disease are available in the private system. The Ministry of Health (MINSAL) has confirmed 11 cases and is monitoring 200 contacts.
“There are vaccines, it’s just that right now they’ve run out — there aren’t any available. In fact, as we say in good Salvadoran slang, I was left empty-handed when I asked the distributor. There weren’t any as of today, meaning there won’t be any vaccines for the next 15 days,” the infectious disease specialist said.
The COLMEDES president added that the special vaccination campaign MINSAL has rolled out for children aged 6 to 11 months is a good strategy, but that it is also important to immunize adults. Especially those born before 1957 who aren’t certain they received the vaccine — they should get both doses.
“But health workers also need to be vaccinated, because we’re the ones who will be face-to-face with potential cases, and we should receive a single dose. The same goes for first responders: Salvadoran Red Cross ambulance crews, and even tourism workers, since the industry has grown in this country and there are many tour operators. All personnel who come into contact with foreigners should also be vaccinated,” the specialist noted.
Separately, infectious disease specialist Ernesto Navarro Marín pointed out that the measles virus can remain active in the environment even after the infected person has left the area.
“It’s said that it can remain in the air, possibly for an hour, where a person has been coughing,” he explained during the Canal 21 interview.
He noted that a single case can generate multiple infections in a short time. “A single infected person can be capable of infecting up to 14, 15, 18 people,” the doctor said.

El presidente del Colegio Médico de El Salvador (COLMEDES), el doctor Iván Solano Leiva, dijo este lunes 13 de abril que al momento no hay vacunas contra el sarampión a nivel privado.
Durante la entrevista matutina de Telecorporación Salvadoreña, le consultaron al doctor Solano Leiva si en el sistema privado hay vacunas contra la enfermedad, de la que el Ministerio de Salud (MINSAL) confirmó 11 casos y mantiene vigilancia en 200 contactos.
“Sí hay (vacunas), solo que ahorita ya se acabaron, ya no hay disponibles. De hecho, como decimos en buen salvadoreño, yo me quedé silbando en la loma cuando pregunté al distribuidor. No había hasta la fecha, o sea, en los próximos 15 días no habrá (vacunas)”, expresó el médico infectólogo.
El presidente del COLMEDES agregó que es una buena estrategia la que ha implementado el MINSAL con la vacunación especial a niñez de 6 a 11 meses, pero que también es importante inmunizar a los adultos, sobre todo aquellos que nacieron antes de 1957 y que no tienen la certeza de haber recibido el fármaco, deben aplicarse las dos dosis.
“Pero también deben vacunarse los trabajadores de salud porque somos los que vamos a estar frente a frente a posibles casos y recibir una sola dosis, también personal que brinda primeros auxilios: de ambulancias de Cruz Roja Salvadoreña, incluso personal de turismo, pues en este país se ha desarrollado y hay muchas tour operadoras. Todo el personal que entre en contacto con extranjeros también deben vacunarse”, precisó el especialista.
Por otro lado, el infectólogo Ernesto Navarro Marín señaló que el virus del sarampión puede permanecer activo en el ambiente incluso después que la persona infectada haya abandonado el lugar.
“Se dice que puede mantenerse en el aire donde hay una persona que ha estado tosiendo una hora, posiblemente”, explicó en la entrevista de Canal 21.
Mencionó que un solo caso puede generar múltiples contagios en poco tiempo. “Una sola persona infectada puede ser capaz de infectar hasta 14, 15, 18 personas”, indicó el médico.
