The International Observatory for Lawyers in Danger (OIAD) awarded the 2026 Sir Henry Brooke Award to Ruth Eleonor López, a Salvadoran lawyer and human rights defender who has been detained since May 18, 2025.
Cristosal, the human rights organization to which López belongs, stated that this is the fifth international recognition the lawyer has received, but also the fourth she has been unable to accept in person.
“Our colleague Ruth has been unjustly detained for more than 10 months, in a case that has raised alarms about the persecution and systematic attacks against critical voices in El Salvador. That is why we echo her words and demand justice,” the NGO stated on its X account, where it shared details about the award.
López’s nomination for the 2026 Sir Henry Brooke Award was submitted by the OIAD itself. The recognition honors legal professionals and human rights defenders who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights and the rule of law.
The OIAD noted on its website that the award ceremony took place on March 10, 2026, in London, England, where Noah Bullock, director of Cristosal, and Louis Benavides, Ruth López’s husband, accepted the award on her behalf.

El Observatorio Internacional de la Abogacía en Riesgo (OIAD) otorgó el Premio Sir Henry Brooke 2026 a Ruth Eleonor López, abogada y defensora de derechos humanos salvadoreña, detenida desde el 18 de mayo de 2025.
Cristosal, organización de derechos humanos a la que pertenece López, aseguró que este constituye el quinto reconocimiento internacional que recibe la abogada, pero también el cuarto que no ha podido recibir en persona.
“Nuestra compañera Ruth lleva más de 10 meses detenida injustamente, en un caso que ha encendido alertas sobre la persecución y los ataques sistemáticos contra voces críticas en El Salvador. Por eso, hacemos eco de sus palabras y exigimos justicia”, demandó la oenegé en su cuenta de X, donde detalló sobre dicho premio.
La nominación de López para el Premio Sir Henry Brooke 2026 fue presentada por la misma OIAD. El reconocimiento honra a profesionales del derecho y a defensores de derechos humanos que han realizado contribuciones destacadas a la promoción y protección de los derechos humanos y el Estado de derecho.
La OIAD indicó en su página web que la entrega del premio tuvo lugar el 10 de marzo de 2026 en Londres, Inglaterra, donde Noah Bullock, director de Cristosal, y Louis Benavides, esposo de Ruth López, recibieron el premio en su nombre.
