During the Eucharist held this Tuesday, March 24, marking the 46th anniversary of the assassination of Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero, Monsignor José Luis Escobar Alas, archbishop of San Salvador, called for the removal of taxes on medicines and basic food staples, and for work on pension reform.
For the monsignor, “a new tax system” is necessary because currently it is “the workers and the people who pay the tax.” He said it is time to “change that disastrous system” and to “reinstate the wealth tax” as it was before, where those who “have more, pay more.”
“It would be advisable to exempt basic products, or at least medicine, from the VAT (value-added tax). For Monsignor Romero, this would mean tearing down the old structures to build new, more just and equitable ones,” the clergyman stated.
He also called for support for agriculture, which, although it does have improved seeds and fertilizers, needs support “with technology in agricultural machinery” for farmers.
Another point he highlighted was pension reform, in addition to the implementation of a food law.
“Also, to hope that a food law is enacted that ensures the people not just survival, but a dignified life. Support for national commerce, for entrepreneurs. It would be advisable to work on pension reform to offer dignified, lifelong pensions, not only for the formal sector but also for the informal sector,” he said.
Finally, he asked that innocent people detained in the context of the state of exception be released and, although the violence has been overcome, he advocated for swift justice to be administered to them, “giving them the freedom to which they have always had a right.”
Arzobispo Escobar Alas pidió reducción de impuestos a medicinas
Durante la eucaristía realizada este martes 24 de marzo, por el 46° aniversario del magnicidio de san Óscar Arnulfo Romero, monseñor José Luis Escobar Alas, arzobispo de San Salvador, pidió que se retiren los impuestos a las medicinas, a la canasta básica y que se trabaje en la reforma de pensiones.
Para monseñor es necesario “un nuevo sistema tributario” porque en la actualidad son “los trabajadores y el pueblo el que paga el impuesto”. Dijo que es momento de “cambiar ese sistema nefasto” y que se “restablezca el impuesto al patrimonio”, como estaba antes, donde los que “más tienen, paguen más”.
“Convendría desgravar del impuesto del IVA (impuesto de valor agregado) a los productos básicos o al menos a la medicina. Esto sería para monseñor Romero derribar las estructuras antiguas para construir nuevas, más justas y equitativas”, aseveró el religioso.
También pidió apoyo para la agricultura, que aunque sí cuenta con semilla mejorada y abonos, es necesario el apoyo “con tecnología en la maquinaria agrícola”, para los campesinos.
Otro punto que destacó fue la reforma de pensiones además de la implementación de una ley alimentaria.
“También desear que se promulgue una ley alimentaria que asegure al pueblo no la supervivencia, sino una vida digna. El apoyo al comercio nacional, a los emprendedores. Conviene que se trabaje en la reforma de las pensiones para ofrecer pensiones dignas y vitalicias, no solo al sector formal, sino también para el sector informal”, manifestó.
Finalmente, pidió que las personas inocentes capturadas en el contexto del régimen de excepción sean liberadas y que, aunque la violencia ha sido superada, abogó porque se les administre pronta justicia, “dándoles la libertad a la que siempre han tenido derecho”.
