The Archdiocese of San Salvador held a mass yesterday to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero, with a homily delivered by Monsignor José Luis Escobar Alas, Archbishop of San Salvador.
Dozens of parishioners, both local and foreign, attended the mass and Eucharist at the Metropolitan Cathedral in memory of the “Saint of the Americas,” as Saint Óscar Romero is known. He was assassinated on March 24, 1980, while celebrating mass and was canonized on October 14, 2018.
Archbishop Escobar Alas Called for Tax Cuts on Medicines
During the mass, Monsignor Escobar Alas spoke about the work carried out by Saint Óscar Romero, who was a voice for the disadvantaged, as well as the importance of keeping his legacy alive.
“Upon arriving in this archdiocese as its pastor, Monsignor Romero changed his approach to evangelization, for he understood that the gospel could not be neutral in the face of human suffering, and so, with urgency, he denounced the killings, defended the peasants, stood by the mothers who wept for their children, and proclaimed from the pulpit what many were afraid to say,” Monsignor Escobar Alas stated during the homily.
The archbishop called for replicating the teachings of Saint Óscar Romero on working with communities and within the Catholic Church.
“These teachings of our beloved saint, Monsignor Romero, cannot remain in the past, and so I want to express the need to bring his thinking up to date not only in theory but in practice. In fact, we could joyfully affirm that the ecclesiastical province of El Salvador is fully on mission since the 2025 Jubilee Year. It is important that we do not falter in our permanent mission,” he said.
Proposal to Teach a Course on the Life of Monsignor Romero in Schools
Before attending the mass, Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chávez also spoke about the anniversary of Romero’s martyrdom.
“This is the most beautiful part—the people who come freely to leave behind their sorrows, their joys, their gratitude, and also to gather strength and move forward. It’s not easy to live in El Salvador right now,” he said.
To commemorate Romero’s assassination, in 2010 the United Nations (UN) proclaimed March 24 as the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims.
Rosa Chávez emphasized that the observance was created as a tribute to the Salvadoran saint. “Without truth there is no justice, there is no peace,” he concluded.

“Romero entendió que el evangelio no puede ser neutral”: arzobispo de San Salvador
La Arquidiócesis de San Salvador realizó ayer una misa en conmemoración del 46° aniversario del martirio de san Óscar Arnulfo Romero, con una homilía a cargo de monseñor José Luis Escobar Alas, arzobispo de San Salvador.
Decenas de feligreses, nacionales y extranjeros, participaron de la misa y la eucaristía en Catedral Metropolitana en memoria del “Santo de América”, como se conoce a san Óscar Romero, asesinado el 24 de marzo de 1980 mientras oficiaba misa y canonizado el 14 de octubre de 2018.
Arzobispo Escobar Alas pidió reducción de impuestos a medicinas
Durante la misa, monseñor Escobar Alas se refirió al trabajo que realizó san Óscar Romero, quien fue un vocero de los desfavorecidos, además de la importancia de mantener su legado.
“Venido a esta arquidiócesis, como su pastor, la evangelización en monseñor Romero cambió, pues comprendió que el evangelio no podía ser neutral ante el sufrimiento humano, y por eso, con urgencia denunció los asesinatos, defendió a los campesinos, acompañó a las madres que lloraban a sus hijos y proclamó desde el púlpito lo que muchos tenían miedo de decir”, aseveró monseñor Escobar Alas durante la homilía.
El arzobispo llamó a replicar las enseñanzas de san Óscar Romero sobre el trabajo con las comunidades y en la Iglesia católica.
“Esas enseñanzas de nuestro querido santo, monseñor Romero, no pueden quedar en el pasado, por eso quiero expresar la necesidad de actualizar su pensamiento no solo en teoría, sino en la práctica. De hecho, podríamos afirmar con alegría que la provincia eclesiástica de El Salvador está completamente en misión desde el año jubilar 2025. Es importante que no desmayemos en la misión permanente”, dijo.
Proponen impartir una materia sobre la vida de monseñor Romero en las escuelas
Antes de asistir a la misa, el cardenal Gregorio Rosa Chávez también se refirió al aniversario del martirio de Romero.
“Esta es la parte más linda, la del pueblo que viene libremente para dejar sus tristezas, alegrías, gratitud, y también para tomar fuerzas y salir adelante. No es fácil ahora vivir en El Salvador”, aseguró.
Para conmemorar el asesinato de Romero, en 2010 Naciones Unidas (ONU) proclamó el 24 de marzo como el Día Internacional del Derecho a la Verdad en relación con Violaciones Graves de los Derechos Humanos y de la Dignidad de las Víctimas.
Rosa Chávez resaltó que la efémeride fue creada como homenaje al santo salvadoreño. “Sin verdad no hay justicia, no hay paz”, concluyó.
