In commemoration of the 46th anniversary of the assassination of Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero, the foundation established to honor his legacy, the Monseñor Romero Foundation, is asking for a subject in public schools that covers the work Monseñor Romero carried out, along with truth rather than prison for his murder on March 24, 1980.

Father Santos Belisario Hernández Portillo, who is in charge of logistics for the 46th anniversary of Monseñor Romero’s martyrdom and represents the Monseñor Romero Foundation, quoted Catholic Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chávez to emphasize the projects that should be carried out to keep Saint Romero’s legacy alive.

This is also part of the reparation measures ordered by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in April 2000, when it recommended that the Salvadoran state take various actions for the different violations the state committed in the case of Saint Romero’s martyrdom. Among these measures, the foundation believes there should be projects in schools and monuments, as well as finding the truth about the crime and identifying the guilty parties.

“There is already a ruling (IACHR report) that we heard a few days ago from the cardinal (Rosa Chávez), which said that the government needs to make reparations to the figure of Monseñor Romero, that every school should have a subject that talks about Monseñor Romero. We are asking that the truth be known, more than asking for prison or an open conviction, that the truth be brought to light so that Monseñor Romero’s remains can truly rest in peace,” asserted Father Hernández Portillo.

He also said it is necessary for “the government to publicly ask for forgiveness and for major monuments to be named. The highway that was built and the airport are not enough,” he stated.

The foundation stressed that a fair trial is needed and that it must be possible to know who the masterminds and perpetrators of Saint Romero’s assassination are. “That they be convicted as they should be, and that people know the truth,” he emphasized.

Regarding the judicial case involving Saint Romero, it remains just as it was left in March 2025, when the Tutela Legal “Doctora María Julia Hernández” organization, the Concertación Romero, and other organizations submitted a request to the Fourth Court of Instruction to advance the judicial process regarding the crime to trial, given that there is sufficient evidence against former captain Álvaro Rafael Saravia and other implicated individuals.

A year later, that request remains unanswered, and the case has now reached nine years since it was reopened, without any certainty so far as to when those responsible for the assassination will go to trial, much less whether there will be justice and reparations.

Faithful commemorate the 46th anniversary of Monseñor Romero’s martyrdom with a procession, Mass, and cultural event

The Monseñor Romero Foundation held the commemorative event “Monseñor Romero lives and walks with his people” on March 21, which began with the lantern procession, followed by the Eucharist and cultural acts at the Plaza Divino Salvador del Mundo.

Tomorrow, the activities commemorating Saint Romero will continue at the Metropolitan Cathedral, organized by the Archdiocese of San Salvador and led by Monseñor José Luis Escobar Alas, Archbishop of San Salvador.

Proponen impartir una materia sobre la vida de monseñor Romero en las escuelas

En conmemoración del 46 aniversario del magnicidio de san Óscar Arnulfo Romero, la fundación que nació para honrar su legado, Fundación Monseñor Romero pide que haya una materia en las escuelas públicas que hable del trabajo que realizó monseñor Romero, además de que haya verdad más que cárcel por su asesinato ocurrido el 24 de marzo de 1980.

El padre Santos Belisario Hernández Portillo, quien es el encargado de la logística del 46 aniversario del martirio de monseñor Romero y representante de la Fundación Monseñor Romero, citó al cardenal de la iglesia católica, Gregorio Rosa Chávez, para enfatizar los proyectos que deberían realizarse para mantener vivo el legado de san Romero.

Esto también como parte de las medidas de reparación que dictó la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) en abril del año 2000, cuando recomendó al Estado salvadoreño realizar diferentes acciones por las diferentes violaciones que realizó el Estado en el caso del martirio de san Romero. Entre estas medidas, la Fundación estima que deberían ser proyectos en escuelas, y monumentos, además, de encontrar la verdad sobre el crimen e identificar a los culpables.

“Ya hay un dictamen (informe CIDH) que escuchábamos hace unos días de parte del cardenal (Rosa Chávez), el cual decía que había que hacer una reparación a la figura de monseñor Romero de parte del gobierno, que en todas las escuelas haya una materia que hable de monseñor Romero. Se pide que se conozca la verdad, más que pedir cárcel o o como una condena abierta, que la verdad sea dada luz para que descansen de verdad los restos de monseñor Romero”, aseveró el padre Hernández Portillo.

Además, dijo que es necesario también que “el gobierno pida perdón públicamente y que se nombren grandes monumentos. La autopista que se hizo y el aeropuerto no son suficientes”, aseguró.

La Fundación hizo hincapié en es necesario que haya un juicio justo y que se pueda saber quiénes son los autores intelectuales y materiales en el asesinato de san Romero. “Que sean condenados como se debe y que la gente conozca la verdad”, enfatizó.

Sobre el caso judicial de san Romero, este sigue tal cual se dejó en marzo de 2025, cuando la organización Tutela Legal “doctora María Julia Hernández”, la Concertación Romero y otras organizaciones presentaron al Juzgado Cuarto de Instrucción una solicitud de elevación a plenario (a juicio) del proceso judicial sobre el crimen, debido a que se tienen pruebas suficientes en contra del excapitán Álvaro Rafael Saravia y otros implicados.

Un año después esa solicitud sigue sin respuesta y el caso cumplió ya nueve años desde que se reabrió sin que se obtenga hasta el momento certeza de cuándo irán a juicio los responsables del asesinato, mucho menos si habrá justicia y reparación.

Fieles conmemoran con procesión, misa y acto cultural el 46º aniversario del martirio de Monseñor Romero

La Fundación Monseñor Romero realizó el pasado 21 de marzo la jornada conmemorativa “Monseñor Romero vive y camina con su pueblo”, que inició con la procesión de los farolitos, desarrollándose después la eucaristía y actos culturales que se realizaron en la Plaza Divino Salvador del Mundo.

Mañana seguirán las actividades en conmemoración de san Romero, en la Catedral Metropolitana por parte de la Arquidiócesis de San Salvador, que estará a cargo de monseñor José Luis Escobar Alas, arzobispo de San Salvador.
