Mateo Rendón, coordinator of the Agricultural Working Group, said they met Friday to discuss the issue, and they hope the Ministry of Agriculture will step in to keep prices from skyrocketing.

There is a possibility the government could sell inputs at a low cost in anticipation of price hikes.

Meanwhile, Luis Treminio, president of the Salvadoran Chamber of Small and Medium Agricultural Producers (CAMPO), said that, for now, there shouldn’t be any price increases for inputs, as importers already have most of the product ready for the upcoming planting season, which begins in May.

At least in this first phase, we wouldn’t see price increases.

He also called on the Consumer Protection Agency not to allow speculation on these products.

Where both agree is on the threat posed by the weather, since, according to experts, the El Niño phenomenon is likely to develop this year, bringing periods of drought that affect domestic production.

Both Treminio and Rendón said they are monitoring environmental developments and their implications. “We are on alert,” Rendón said.

Treminio said they are advising producers to plant starting the second week of May and then watch how the weather develops.

They made these statements at the close of the forum “Is our food security and sovereignty guaranteed?” which was held in the Dagoberto Marroquín building at the University of El Salvador (UES), and was attended by people involved in the country’s agricultural sector, as well as other civil society and human rights organizations.

Mateo Rendón, coordinador de la Mesa Agropecuaria, afirmó que se reunieron el viernes para analizar esta problemática en la que esperan que el Ministerio de Agricultura tome cartas en el asunto para que los precios no se disparen.

Hay una posibilidad de que el gobierno pueda vender insumos a bajo costo previendo las alzas.

Mientras que Luis Treminio, presidente de la Asociación Cámara Salvadoreña de Pequeños y Medianos Productores Agropecuarios (CAMPO), afirmó que por ahora no deberían reflejarse aumentos de precio en los insumos pues los importadores ya tienen la mayoría del producto listo para la próxima siembra, que inicia en mayo.

Al menos en esta primera fase, no veríamos aumento de precios.

También hizo un llamado a la Defensoría del Consumidor a que no permita la especulación de estos productos.

En lo que ambos coinciden es en las amenazas del clima pues de acuerdo a expertos, es probable que este año se desarrolle el fenómeno del Niño, que trae épocas de sequía y afecta la producción nacional.

Tanto Treminio como Rendón dijeron que están atentos al desarrollo del medio ambiente y sus implicaciones. “Estamos alertas”, dijo Rendón.

Treminio afirmó que están recomendando a los productores sembrar a partir de la segunda semana de mayo y luego ver la evolución del clima.

Estas declaraciones las brindaron al finalizar el Foro “¿Tenemos garantizada la seguridad y soberanía alimentaria?” el cual se desarrolló en el edificio Dagoberto Marroquín en la Universidad de El Salvador (UES) y en el que participaron personas ligadas al tema agropecuario del país, así como otras organizaciones civiles y de derechos humanos.
