Patients at the Centro Integral de Hemodiálisis Ciudadela Monserrat (Ciudadela Monserrat Comprehensive Hemodialysis Center), operated by the Instituto Salvadoreño del Seguro Social (Salvadoran Social Security Institute, ISSS), reported that on the evening of Wednesday, February 18, treatment was suspended due to a water shortage in the facility’s cisterns.
“The problem started around 4:30 in the afternoon, when the cistern stopped supplying rooms one and two, where about 50 machines were operating. Then room three was affected as well,” one of the patients told this outlet.
The source explained that the supply was intermittent. “About 10 minutes later a small amount of water came through and they managed to keep the dialysis sessions going a little longer, but after that the water stopped entirely. So the staff began taking all the patients off the machines.”
As physicians have explained on previous occasions, hemodialysis sessions should “ideally” last four hours; however, on Wednesday, patients had their treatment cut short and interrupted.
The patients consulted said that on the morning of Thursday, February 19, no problems were reported among those who received hemodialysis during the 6:00 a.m. session or the 10:00 a.m. shift.
“We understand a water truck was brought in to fill the cistern. The night the treatment was interrupted, some patients fell ill,” they said.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA sent an email today to the director of the ISSS, Mónica Ayala, requesting comment on the matter. A response is pending at this time.
Falta de agua impidió realizar hemodiálisis en Monserrat del ISSS, según denuncias
Pacientes del Centro Integral de Hemodiálisis Ciudadela Monserrat, del Instituto Salvadoreño del Seguro Social (ISSS) denunciaron que el miércoles 18 de febrero, por la noche, se suspendió el tratamiento debido a la falta de agua en las cisternas del lugar.
“El problema comenzó como a las 4:30 de la tarde cuando la cisterna dejó de abastecer a las salas uno y dos, donde funcionaban unas 50 máquinas. Luego se vio afectada la sala tres”, dijo una de las pacientes a este medio.
La fuente explicó que el suministro fue intermitente. “Como a los 10 minutos llegó un poquito de agua y lograron realizar las diálisis por un poquito más de tiempo, pero de ahí ya no llegó el agua. Entonces, el personal empezó a sacar a todos los pacientes”.
El proceso de hemodiálisis, como han explicado médicos en ocasiones anteriores, debe realizarse por cuatro horas “idealmente”, sin embargo, el miércoles a los pacientes se les acortó e interrumpió el tratamiento.
Los pacientes consultados dijeron que este jueves 19 de febrero por la mañana no se reportaron problemas con las personas que recibieron la hemodiálisis a las 6:00 de la mañana, ni en el turno de las 10:00 a.m.
“Sabemos que llegó una pipa para llenar la cisterna. La noche que se interrumpió el tratamiento algunos pacientes se pusieron mal”, dijeron.
