Teachers, principals, and education unions are awaiting details regarding the content changes in school textbooks slated for distribution for the 2026 academic year, which were announced days ago by the Ministry of Education. However, they believe certain topics should be reinforced or explored in greater depth, such as the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
On November 14, Minister of Education Captain Karla Trigueros informed the Finance Commission of the Legislative Assembly regarding a curriculum renewal involving the distribution of new educational materials.
We will seek the complete replacement of study programs that were already obsolete, the official declared. This renewed curriculum would include technical high school programs to ensure they meet current, real-world needs in the country, taking emerging industries into account.
El Diario de Hoy spoke with members of the educational community in the San Salvador district, who asserted they still lack substantial information regarding changes to the content of the textbooks to be used, specifically whether topics will be added to or removed from the curriculum.
According to some educators, the topics that should be included in school textbooks are those related to the use and management of Artificial Intelligence, and they argue that Salvadoran history should be covered in greater depth than world history.
School administrators in San Salvador Centro stated that, for the moment, estimates suggest the changes are aimed at removing gender-inclusive language from the content, based on what representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MINEDUCYT) have explained in initial meetings.
A teacher at a school in the Historic Center of the capital confirmed this. She shared that some teachers at other institutions are already receiving training to understand the basics of the content to be reformed in the books for next year; however, the Ministry has not yet provided further information to principals or teachers.
Regarding the content of the books, we will learn about it and receive training only when they are delivered, whether in January at the start of the school year, or possibly in December of this year, said one of the educators.
In her address to the Legislative Assembly, Minister Trigueros also mentioned that we will hold camps and training sessions for teachers to explain the changes that may occur in each of the curricula; we are also giving them the necessary tools to implement them.
On October 2, MINEDUCYT sent a memorandum ordering the prohibition of gender-inclusive language in all educational centers and dependencies of said institution. A section of the circular indicated that this measure must be applied on a mandatory basis nationwide in materials, content, and books derived from this State portfolio.
This year, education authorities also promoted the themes of school coexistence and discipline.
New Method for Language Arts and Mathematics
When asked, Alex Granados, representative of the National Curriculum Directorate of MINEDUCYT, mentioned only that we will gradually publish the materials on the website; there you will see the educational proposal we are bringing as a Ministry. He stated he could not provide further information.
MINEDUCYT will also implement in-person synchronous digital classes for Language Arts and Mathematics subjects.
According to educators, the teacher and students will connect via laptops or tablets to a platform established by the Ministry to cover certain topics, activities, and assignments in real time within the classroom. Furthermore, sources stated that the duration of these classes would increase from 45 minutes to 55 minutes.
Awaiting Information on Content
In this regard, Francisco Zelada, Secretary General of the Sindicato de Maestras y Maestros de la Educación Pública de El Salvador (Union of Public Education Teachers of El Salvador, SIMEDUCO), declared that we do not know in which direction the changes will point; but based on what the minister has said, it is most likely they will proceed along those lines.
For his part, David Rodríguez, Secretary of Bases Magisteriales, says that saying changes will be made has been a top-down decision; but there has been no significant information. We are waiting for the guidelines they provide.
Israel Montano, Secretary of the Asociación Nacional de Educadores Salvadoreños (National Association of Salvadoran Educators, ANDES 21 de Junio), agrees with Rodríguez, adding that we have requested a hearing with the Minister, so when we have a meeting, we will have information.
They are not complying with Article 30 of the Ley de la Carrera Docente (Teaching Career Law) regarding consultation with the teaching body on any changes to be made, which establishes that any matter of interest must be consulted with educators through teacher organizations, point out Bases Magisteriales and SIMEDUCO.
The unions affirm that on several occasions they have requested a meeting with Minister Trigueros to discuss curriculum reform, educational modernization, and other points; however, to date, they have not been summoned.
About three years ago, we submitted proposals for changes to the educational curriculum and textbook content, but they were not taken into account. It would be advisable to convene new dialogue roundtables in order to resubmit them, suggests Montano.
In the Finance Commission of the Legislative Assembly, the Minister of Education also stated that 71.4 million dollars will be allocated for the curriculum reform program, which implies six million updated textbooks for all students across all levels and subjects.
Educadores y gremiales a la expectativa sobre el cambio en los planes de estudio
Maestros, directores y gremiales de educación están a la expectativa de cuáles serán los cambios de contenido en los libros escolares a entregarse para el año lectivo 2026, anunciados hace algunos días por el Ministerio de Educación; sin embargo, consideran que algunos temas deberían reforzarse o profundizar en ellos, como el uso de Inteligencia Artificial (IA).
El pasado 14 de noviembre, la ministra de Educación, la capitana Karla Trigueros, informó en la comisión de Hacienda de la Asamblea Legislativa una renovación de la currícula con la entrega de nuevos materiales educativos.
«Vamos a buscar la sustitución completa de programas de estudio que ya estaban desfasados», declaró la funcionaria. Este currículo renovado incluiría a los bachilleratos técnicos para que «respondan a las necesidades reales de actualización» en el país, considerando a las industrias emergentes.
El Diario de Hoy consultó a algunos miembros de la comunidad educativa de escuelas del distrito de San Salvador, quienes aseguraron que no cuentan aún con mayor información sobre los cambios en el contenido de los libros que serán utilizados, si se agregarán o suprimirán temas de la currícula.
Según algunos educadores, los temas que deberían incluirse en los libros escolares son los que tienen que ver con el manejo de Inteligencia Artificial y profundizar más en la historia salvadoreña que en la mundial.
Autoridades de centros educativos en San Salvador Centro dijeron que, por el momento, se estima que los cambios van encaminados a retirar el lenguaje de género en los contenidos, según lo que gestores del MINEDUCYT les han expuesto en reuniones iniciales.
Lo mismo afirma una docente de una escuela en el Centro Histórico capitalino. Según comparte, algunos maestros de otras instituciones ya están siendo capacitados para conocer básicamente el contenido que se reformará en los libros a entregar el próximo año; pero que el Ministerio todavía no ha brindado mayor información de ello a directores ni a docentes.
«Sobre el contenido de los libros, nosotros lo vamos a saber y vamos a ser capacitados hasta que los entreguen, ya sea en enero, a inicios del año escolar o posiblemente en diciembre (de este año)», dijo uno de los educadores.
En su intervención en la Asamblea Legislativa, la ministra Trigueros mencionó también que «vamos a tener campamentos y capacitaciones para los docentes para explicar los cambios que pueden haber en cada una de las currículas, también les estamos dando las herramientas necesarias para poder implementarlos».
El 2 de octubre, el Ministerio de Educación, Ciencia y Tecnología (MINEDUCYT) envió un memorándum con la orden de prohibir el uso del lenguaje inclusivo en todos los centros educativos y dependencias de dicha institución. En una parte de la circular se indicó que «esta medida se debe aplicar con carácter obligatorio a nivel nacional en los materiales, contenidos y libros que deriven de esta cartera de Estado».
También se promovió este año de parte de las autoridades de Educación el tema de la convivencia escolar y la disciplina.
Nuevo método para Lenguaje y Matemática
Al consultar al representante de la Dirección Nacional de Currículo, del MINEDUCYT, Alex Granados, únicamente mencionó que «paulatinamente vamos a ir publicando los materiales en la página web, allí se van a dar cuenta de la propuesta educativa que llevamos como Ministerio». Y expresó no podía dar más información.
El MINEDUCYT también implementará clases digitales sincrónicas presenciales para las asignaturas de Lenguaje y Matemática.
De acuerdo con educadores, el maestro y los estudiantes estarán interconectados con sus laptops o tablets a la plataforma establecida por el Ministerio para desarrollar ciertos temas, actividades y tareas en tiempo real en el salón de clases. Además, según dijeron las fuentes, la duración de estas clases pasaría de ser de 45 minutos a 55 minutos.
Esperan se informe contenidos
En ese sentido, el Secretario General del Sindicato de Maestras y Maestros de la Educación Pública de El Salvador (SIMEDUCO), Francisco Zelada, declaró que «no sabemos en qué dirección van a apuntar los cambios; pero por lo que ha dicho la ministra lo más probable es que vaya por allí».
Por su parte, el Secretario de Bases Magisteriales, David Rodríguez, dice que «ha sido una cuestión vertical el decir que se harán unos cambios; pero no ha habido mayor información. Estamos esperando los lineamientos que den».
También, el Secretario de la Asociación Nacional de Educadores Salvadoreños (ANDES 21 de Junio), Israel Montano, coincide con Rodríguez y añade que «hemos solicitado una audiencia a la Ministra, entonces cuando tengamos reunión vamos a tener información».
«No le están dando cumplimiento al Art. 30 de la Ley de la Carrera Docente sobre consultar al Magisterio cualquier cambio que se vaya a realizar, donde establece que cualquier asunto de interés debe ser consultado con los educadores a través de las organizaciones de maestros», señalan Bases Magisteriales así como SIMEDUCO .
Las gremiales afirman que en diferentes ocasiones han solicitado a la ministra Trigueros concretar una reunión para tratar el tema de la reforma en la currícula, la modernización educativa, así como otros puntos; pero que hasta la fecha no han sido convocados.
«Hace como unos tres años hicimos propuestas de cambios a la currícula educativa, a los contenidos en los libros; pero no se tomaron en cuenta. Sería de generar nuevas mesas de diálogo para volverlos a proponer», sugiere Montano.
En la comisión de Hacienda de la Asamblea Legislativa, la ministra de Educación también dijo que se destinarán $71.4 millones para el programa de reforma curricular, que implica seis millones de libros de texto actualizados para todos los estudiantes en todos los niveles y asignaturas.
