“Ruth Eleonora López is the winner of the 2025 Magnitsky Award for Outstanding Human Rights Lawyer, celebrating her tireless defense of victims of injustice and her pivotal role in the fight against corruption and for accountability in El Salvador,” the Campaña Global de Justicia Magnitsky (Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign) posted on social media.
The Magnitsky Awards are presented annually in November to individuals who have made significant contributions to the protection and promotion of human rights.
These awards are named after the Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was murdered in police custody in Russia after uncovering a vast government corruption scheme. His name has since become synonymous with the Magnitsky Act, which aims to freeze the assets and bar the entry of human rights violators worldwide.
The Magnitsky Awards were established in 2015 to recognize the courageous work of journalists, politicians, and activists in the field of human rights. Past laureates include Boris Nemtsov, Senator John McCain, Jamal Khashoggi, Maria Ressa, Oleg Sentsov, Gulchehra Hoja, and Geoffrey Robertson.
The event is held in London each November to commemorate the legacy of Sergei Magnitsky; the gala dinner is attended by journalists, politicians, civil society representatives, and NGOs.
The ceremony also provides laureates an opportunity to denounce the world’s gravest injustices before a wide audience.
The lawyer and human rights defender Ruth Eleonora López was arrested by the police on the night of May 18, 2025, for the alleged crimes of embezzlement and illicit enrichment stemming from her purported collaboration with Eugenio Chicas, former president of the Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE, Supreme Electoral Tribunal).
Amnesty International declared her a prisoner of conscience for facing persecution and imprisonment after denouncing irregularities and exposing corruption in the Salvadoran government.
The Magnitsky Award is the second honor bestowed upon López during her unjust detention under the state of exception. On August 25 of this year, the American Bar Association (ABA) recognized her with its “2025 International Human Rights Award.”
The ABA selected López in 2025 from an exceptionally strong slate of nominations, in recognition of her courageous defense of democracy and the rule of law, as well as her unrelenting efforts to promote transparency and human rights in El Salvador.
While the government seeks to silence López and other human rights defenders arbitrarily detained under the state of exception, the international community applauds and supports her struggle, reaffirming that her work is recognized far beyond El Salvador’s borders.

“Ruth Eleonora López es la ganadora del Premio Magnitsky 2025 a la Abogada Destacada en Derechos Humanos», que celebra su incansable defensa de las víctimas de la injusticia y su papel clave en la lucha contra la corrupción y por la rendición de cuentas en El Salvador”, publicó en redes sociales la Campaña Global de Justicia Magnitsky.
Los Premios Magnitsky son entregados anualmente en noviembre, a personas quienes han contribuido significativamente a la protección y promoción de los derechos humanos.
Estos premios llevan el nombre del abogado ruso Sergei Magnitsky, asesinado bajo custodia policial en Rusia tras destapar una enorme trama de corrupción gubernamental. Su nombre se ha convertido desde entonces en sinónimo de la Ley Magnitsky, cuyo objetivo es congelar los activos y prohibir la entrada al país a quienes violan los derechos humanos en todo el mundo.
Los Premios Magnitsky se crearon en 2015 para reconocer la labor de periodistas, políticos y activistas valientes en el ámbito de los derechos humanos. Entre los galardonados se encuentran Boris Nemtsov, el senador John McCain, Jamal Khashoggi, Maria Ressa, Oleg Sentsov, Gulchehra Hoja y Geoffrey Robertson.
El evento se celebra en Londres cada noviembre para conmemorar el legado de Sergei Magnitsky, a la cena de gala asisten periodistas, políticos, representantes de la sociedad civil y ONG.
En la ceremonia también se brinda a los galardonados la oportunidad de denunciar, ante un público amplio, las terribles injusticias que ocurren en el mundo.
La abogada y defensora de derechos humanos Ruth Eleonora López fue capturada por la Policía Nacional Civil (PNC) la noche del 18 de mayo de 2025, por los supuestos delitos de peculado y enriquecimiento ilícito debido a su presunta colaboración con Eugenio Chicas, expresidente del Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE).
Amnistía Internacional la declaró como prisionera de conciencia, por enfrentar persecución y prisión al denunciar irregularidades, y exponer la corrupción en el gobierno salvadoreño
El Premio Magnitsky es el segundo que tendrá López mientras está en injustamente detenida bajo el régimen de excepción, pues el pasado 25 de agosto de este año la Asociación Americana de Abogados (ABA), la galardonó con el “Premio Internacional de Derechos Humanos 2025”.
ABA seleccionó este 2025 a la abogada López entre una lista de nominaciones excepcionalmente sólidas, en reconocimiento a su valiente defensa de la democracia y el estado de derecho, así como a sus incansables esfuerzos por promover la transparencia y los derechos humanos en El Salvador.
Mientras el gobierno pretende callar a la abogada López y otros defensores de derechos humanos capturados arbitrariamente en el régimen de excepción, la comunidad internacional aplaude y respalda su lucha, reafirmando que su trabajo es reconocido más allá de las fronteras.
