Communities in the district of San Lorenzo, in Ahuachapán Norte, have organized to carry out road infrastructure projects they consider critical to their well-being. According to residents, the projects were requested from the local municipal government, run by Nuevas Ideas, and also from the Dirección de Obras Municipales (Directorate of Municipal Works, DOM), but their requests went unanswered.
In the Nuevo Reparto community, residents are building a vehicular bridge over the San Antonio River that will benefit more than six communities and some 3,000 people. The project is an arch culvert bridge built with more than 30 concrete pipes, which will span 50 meters in length and four in width. They indicated they will invest approximately $20,000, raised through contributions from residents at home and abroad.
According to the Asociación de Desarrollo Comunal Reparto Nuevo San Lorenzo (Community Development Association of Reparto Nuevo San Lorenzo, ADESCONSAL), the community had spent over 25 years petitioning various municipal administrations for the bridge project, but none delivered, nor did the DOM respond to their request.
“We collected over 1,400 signatures and submitted the petition to the municipal government, but in three months we received no reply. In March, we asked that a municipal representative accompany us to present the petition to the DOM. There, they told us projects were moving ‘at a glacial pace.’ We realized we would make no headway through that channel, so we began going door-to-door,” commented Tilo Ortiz of ADESCONSAL.
Meanwhile, in the El Conacaste canton of the same district, members of the local community development association (ADESCO) are working to repair a dilapidated drainage ditch that posed a risk to residents. They stated that they requested support from the municipal government, but their pleas also went unanswered.
“It is disheartening because we have never felt such a profound lack of support as with this administration; previously, there was institutional follow-through and a community matching contribution, but today there is nothing of the sort,” remarked one local, who requested anonymity.

En la comunidad Nuevo Reparto, los habitantes están construyendo un puente vehicular sobre el río San Antonio, que beneficiará a más de seis comunidades y a unas 3,000 personas. La obra que realizan es un puente tipo bóveda con más de 30 tuberías de concreto, que medirá 50 metros de largo y cuatro de ancho. Indicaronque invertirán aproximadamente $20,000, los cuales han sido obtenidos a través de colaboraciones de todos los vecinos y de residentes en el exterior.
Según la Asociación de Desarrollo Comunal Reparto Nuevo San Lorenzo (ADESCONSAL), la comunidad tenía más de 25 años solicitando el proyecto del puente a diferentes administraciones municipales, pero ninguna les cumplió, al igual que la DOM, que tampoco les dio respuesta a su petición.
“Hicimos una recolección de más de 1,400 firmas y entregamos la solicitud a la alcaldía, pero en tres meses no nos dio respuesta; en marzo pedimos el acompañamiento de un representante municipal para llevar la petición a la DOM. Allí nos dijeron que los proyectos iban ‘lentísimos’. Vimos que no avanzaríamos por esa vía, así que empezamos a visitar casa por casa”, comentó Tilo Ortiz, de la ADESCO.
Mientras que en el cantón El Conacaste de ese mismo distrito, miembros de la ADESCO están trabajando en la reparación de una cuneta en mal estado que era un riesgo para los vecinos. Afirmaron que pidieron apoyo de la alcaldía, pero que tampoco hubo respuesta a sus solicitudes.
“Es triste porque nunca habíamos sentido una falta de apoyo tan grande como con esta administración; antes había una gestión y una contrapartida comunitaria, hoy no hay nada de eso”, opinó un lugareño en anonimato.
