Natalia was one semester away from finishing her culinary arts degree at a higher education institution. The 21-year-old had told her family that she would resume her studies next January and finish the remaining courses.
She will not fulfill her dream. Natalia Raquel Bernal Gómez was robbed of the opportunity to become a chef. She was murdered in early September, and her decomposing body was found on September 9 on a plot of land in Nuevo Cuscatlán, in eastern La Libertad.
“She had made plans to finish her studies and would talk with her brother about traveling together to study starting in January,” recounted Guadalupe Gómez, Natalia’s grandmother.
Gómez told El Diario de Hoy what her granddaughter experienced during part of her life. She describes her as a joyful person who had to face difficult situations, despite being so young.
According to her grandmother, Natalia always tried to protect her younger brother. She was forced to look after him after their mother was arrested under the state of exception in January 2024.
Despite not having a formal job, she baked cupcakes to sell from her home to provide for herself and her brother. She was also in charge of taking a care package to her mother at the prison where she is being held.
“One does not expect these things; she was a young woman just beginning to live, perhaps with very negative experiences, but she knew there were reasons to keep going, she knew there are difficult situations one must face and overcome,” Guadalupe narrated.
Natalia had not gone out to parties for two weeks. On September 1, she went to deliver the package to her mother, and her grandmother repeatedly told her they were praying for her.
The Party Near the Sports Complex
It was 2:00 p.m. on that Friday, September 5, when Guadalupe last saw her granddaughter. She still remembers seeing her lying in her hammock, where she rested in the afternoons. That spot now holds only her granddaughter’s clothing.
That afternoon, Natalia received a call. Her grandmother recalls the phone was on speaker, and she heard a man’s voice say: “I will wait for you after five.” She simply replied that she would be at the agreed-upon place.
Guadalupe knew that Natalia would attend a party that night at a residence located just meters from the Huizúcar Sports Complex. All the family knew was that they were celebrating the birthday of a city hall employee.
Around 4:30 p.m., a friend arrived to pick her up, and they headed to the party. Natalia’s grandmother never imagined it would be the last time they would see her leave the house.
She would usually let them know if she was not coming home to sleep or would tell her grandmother she was staying at a friend’s house. That night, those messages or calls never came. But at that point, her family suspected nothing.
The next day, Natalia’s grandmother and aunt still thought it was normal that she had not returned. But as the afternoon wore on, the wait gave way to anguish. They began contacting the young woman’s friends to ask what had happened.
“Hello, daughter, how and where are you?” was one of the last messages Guadalupe sent to her granddaughter. That message went undelivered. By Sunday the 7th, neither messages nor calls reached the young woman’s number. The phone was already turned off.
That weekend, videos from the party where Natalia had been began to circulate. In some, they could see she looked fine and was enjoying herself. But one video unsettled the Bernal Gómez family: in it, a man yanks the young woman.
The family continued inquiring with her friends about Natalia’s whereabouts. No one provided reliable information. The only detail one offered was that they saw her forced into a black vehicle. But no one alerted the family.
“These friends acted like Judas, because they could have saved her. If they saw her being taken by force, why did they not say anything?” Guadalupe questioned.
On Monday, September 8, they decided to file a missing person report with the police (PNC), and at that moment, authorities initiated their investigation.
Beyond the anguish of knowing nothing about Natalia, they faced another ordeal: individuals attempted to extort Guadalupe, claiming they held her granddaughter and demanding $3,000 for her release. The police warned that it was a scam.
Subsequently, investigators located Natalia’s phone and notified her aunt to come to the Santa Tecla precinct. She describes that several detainees linked to her niece’s case were there, including Raúl Pérez, whom authorities have presented as the primary suspect.
It fell to Natalia’s aunt to identify the body. On the night of Tuesday, September 9, she was informed that a body matching her niece’s description had been found. It was discovered on an abandoned plot of land, just meters from the Salamanca Complex in Nuevo Cuscatlán.
“They took me to identify her and showed me her personal belongings, a paper with her brother’s name that she carried, and also the tattoos she had. Due to the days that had passed, her face could not be recognized,” the aunt narrated.
One Suspect Charged in the Case
On Thursday, October 2, the Huizúcar Justice of the Peace Court ordered that Raúl Pérez remain in custody while investigations continue into the femicide of Natalia Raquel Bernal, the 21-year-old found dead on September 9 in Nuevo Cuscatlán, La Libertad.
Private attorneys who will defend Pérez stated that the defendant’s version is that he socialized with the victim on September 5, and that they later left together on a motorcycle, during which Natalia fell off.
The Prosecutor’s Office charges Pérez with aggravated femicide and requested six months to investigate the case. Additionally, the Huizúcar judge ordered the case transferred to a Specialized Investigative Court for a Life Free of Violence and Discrimination against Women in San Salvador.
“They found her on the Molunca estate, a few meters down from Salamanca. Her body was sort of behind some tall shrubs, and they had tried to hide her and had thrown trash over her. Other items were lying on the other side of the street; her purse was elsewhere,” the young woman’s aunt added.
According to the Legal Medicine Institute, the cause of the young woman’s death was blunt force trauma to the head.

A Natalia le faltaba un semestre para finalizar su carrera de gastronomía en una institución de educación superior. La joven de 21 años le había comentado a su familia que en enero próximo reiniciaría sus estudios y que terminaría las últimas materias que le faltaban.
No cumplirá su sueño. A Natalia Raquel Bernal Gómez le truncaron la oportunidad de convertirse en chef. Fue asesinada a inicios de septiembre y su cuerpo fue encontrado en estado de descomposición el pasado 9 de septiembre en un terreno de Nuevo Cuscatlán, en La Libertad Este.
“Había hecho planes para terminar los estudios y hablaba con el hermano que a partir de enero iban a viajar juntos para estudiar”, contó Guadalupe Gómez, abuela de Natalia.
Gómez relató a El Diario de Hoy lo que vivió su nieta durante una parte de su vida. La describe como una persona alegre que tuvo que enfrentar situaciones difíciles, a pesar de ser tan joven.
Natalia, según su abuela, siempre intentó proteger a su hermano menor. Ella se vio obligada a estar pendiente de él, luego que su madre fuera capturada bajo el régimen de excepción en enero de 2024.
A pesar de no tener un trabajo formal, ella elaboraba «cupcakes» para vender en su vivienda y poder tener ingresos que le permitieran suplir sus necesidades y las de su hermano. Además, se encargaba de llevarle el paquete a su madre al penal en el que está recluida.
“Uno no se espera estas cosas, era una joven que apenas empezaba a vivir, quizás con experiencias muy negativas, pero sabía que habían motivos para seguir viviendo, sabía que habían situaciones difíciles que uno tiene que enfrentar y salir adelante”, narró Guadalupe.
Natalia llevaba dos semanas de no salir a fiestas. El 1 de septiembre fue a dejarle el paquete a su madre y su abuela le repetía que oraban por ella.
La fiesta cerca del Polideportivo
Eran las 2:00 de la tarde de aquel viernes 5 de septiembre cuando Guadalupe vio por última vez a su nieta. Ella aún recuerda haberla visto acostada en su hamaca en la que descansaba por las tardes. Ese lugar ahora conserva únicamente ropa de su nieta.
Esa tarde, Natalia recibió una llamada. Su abuela recuerda que el teléfono estaba en altavoz y escuchó la voz de un hombre que le dijo: “Niña, te espero después de las cinco”. Ella solamente respondió que estaría en el lugar acordado.
Guadalupe sabía que Natalia esa noche iría a una fiesta en una vivienda ubicada a pocos metros del Polideportivo de Huizúcar. Lo que sabía la familia es que celebrarían el cumpleaños de un empleado de la alcaldía, pero nada más.
Aproximadamente a las 4:30 llegó a recogerla un amigo y se dirigieron a la fiesta. La abuela de Natalia jamás se imaginó que sería la última vez que la verían salir de su vivienda.
Ella solía avisar cuando no llegaba a dormir a su casa o le decía a su abuela que se quedaría en casa de una amiga. Esa noche esos mensajes o llamadas no llegaron. Pero hasta ese momento su familia no sospechaba nada.
Al día siguiente, aún la abuela y una tía de Natalia creían que era normal que no llegara. Pero entrada la tarde, la espera empezó a convertirse en angustia. Empezaron a comunicarse con amistades de la joven para preguntarles qué había pasado.
“Hola hija, ¿cómo y dónde estás?”, fue uno de los últimos mensajes que Guadalupe envió a su nieta. Ese mensaje ya no fue recibido. El domingo 7 ni los mensajes ni llamadas llegaron al número de la joven. El celular ya estaba apagado.
Ese fin de semana empezaron a circular videos de la fiesta en la que estuvo Natalia. En algunos pudieron observar que se miraba bien y que estaba disfrutando. Pero uno de estos videos inquietó a la familia Bernal Gómez: en este un hombre jalonea a la joven.
La familia siguió preguntando a sus amistades sobre la ubicación de Natalia. Nadie daba información certera. Lo único que dijo uno de ellos fue que vieron que la subieron por la fuerza a un vehículo negro. Pero nadie avisó a la familia.
«Estas amistades se comportaron como Judas, porque la pudieron salvar. Si vieron que se la llevaban a la fuerza, ¿por qué no dijeron nada?», cuestionó Guadalupe.
El lunes 8 de septiembre decidieron interponer la denuncia de la desaparición ante la Policía Nacional Civil (PNC) y en ese momento las autoridades empezaron las investigaciones.
Aparte de la angustia de no saber nada de Natalia, enfrentaron otro problema: personas intentaron extorsionar a Guadalupe, y mencionaron que tenían a su nieta y pedían $3,000 para liberarla. La PNC advirtió que se trataba de una estafa.
Posteriormente, los investigadores lograron ubicar el celular de Natalia y avisaron a su tía para que llegara a la delegación de Santa Tecla. Ella describe que en ese lugar se encontraban varios detenidos vinculados al caso de su sobrina, entre estos Raúl Pérez, que ha sido presentado por las autoridades como el principal sospechoso del caso.
A la tía de Natalia le tocó reconocer el cadáver. El martes 9 por la noche le avisaron que habían encontrado un cuerpo con las características de su sobrina. Lo encontraron en un terreno abandonado, a pocos metros del Complejo Salamanca, en Nuevo Cuscatlán.
“Me llevaron para reconocerla y me mostraron sus objetos personales, un papel con el nombre de su hermano que andaba e igual los tatuajes que tenía. Por los días que habían pasado no se podía reconocer la cara”, narró la tía.
Un procesado por el caso
El jueves 2 de octubre, el Juzgado de Paz de Huizúcar ordenó que Raúl Pérez continúe detenido mientras duren las investigaciones sobre el feminicidio de Natalia Raquel Bernal, la joven de 21 años que fue encontrada fallecida el pasado 9 de septiembre en Nuevo Cuscatlán, La Libertad.
Abogados particulares que defenderán a Pérez mencionaron que la versión del imputado es que departió con la víctima el pasado 5 de septiembre, y que luego se fue con ella en una motocicleta y que Natalia se cayó de esta.
La Fiscalía acusa a Pérez por el delito de feminicidio agravado y solicitó seis meses para investigar el caso. Además, la jueza de Huizúcar ordenó que el proceso pase a un Juzgado Especializado de Instrucción para una Vida Libre de Violencia y Discriminación para las Mujeres de San Salvador.
“La encontraron en la finca de Molunca unos metros abajo de Salamanca y su cuerpo estaba como detrás de unos arbustos altos y habían intentado esconderla y habían tirado basura encima, otros objetos estaban del otro lado de la calle tirados, su cartera estaba en otro lado”, agregó la tía de la joven.
Según Medicina Legal, la causa de muerte de la joven fue un traumatismo craneoencefálico de tipo contuso.
